There's no time like the fall to make a change for the better. It's a season of transformation, of transition, of new opportunities and new ways to improve -- oh, and new fragrances too, of course. read more
Summer break may be a thing of the past for many of us, but just because we don't get three months off doesn't mean our social calendars are less packed. Backyard BBQs, weddings, date nights en plein air ... there's a certain sense of freedom and hopefulness about summer that no other season can match. And since scent is one of the biggest memory triggers, there's no better way to remember these stolen summer moments between work and other responsibilities than a special summer fragrance. read more
Ah, spring. The birds are chirping, the sun is (mostly) shining, and you're gleefully stowing away the wools and flannels that you swaddled yourself in during the dark days of winter. While you're storing your cable-knit sweaters and fur-lined boots, make some room in the back of your closet for some of your perfumes, too. read more
A sexy perfume puts an essential last touch on your date-night beauty routine. After all, our sense of smell plays an integral role in emotion and memory, key ingredients in the obscure brew that is romance. read more
One of our favorite things about winter is the olfactory experience. You just can't beat the nostalgic smells of freshly fallen snow, pine needles and pumpkin spice. This year's winter perfumes are taking those much-loved scents, and bringing them to a heightened, more complex level. read more
Makeup and clothes tend to get all the attention when it comes to personal style, but above all else, the perfume you wear is most connected to the fabric of your being. read more
Culturally, women are taught to love perfume. A pink, vanity-top spritz bottle is a classic feminine image. The scent that the bottle holds, however, may not be so universally appealing. While most of us love spritzing our way through the department-store counters, there is a minority of women who can't stand perfume. read more
Want to win friends, gain confidence and bring happiness wherever you go? Science says scent can help you do all that, and more. Aromatherapy seems like a hippy-dippy concept, but research shows scents evoke strong emotional responses -- and are the key to setting the tone in an environment. It's the reason why retailers, hotels and restaurants use smells to attract customers and even boost spending. read more
The quest to find your new signature scent can feel staggering. "Do you like florals?" "What's your perfect first date?" "Diamonds or pearls?" The seemingly unrelated questions perfume salespeople pose can leave you sniffing every scent in the store until everything smells like an amalgam of musks, florals, spices and fruits. read more
Perfume is a mixture of fragrant essential oils and aroma compounds, used to give a pleasant scent to the wearer. Different fragrances can affect people in different ways. For example, fragrances like rose can be very relaxing. Because of this, wearing a certain type of perfume can make the wearer feel relaxed, feminine, strong, sexy, or light, in any combination. When selecting your perfume, you can choose your scent to convey something about your personality, as well as affect your mood.
Choosing your Perfume
It is important to understand that some scents will not work well with your body chemistry, no matter how good they smell out of the bottle. Before you choose a scent, you should try it and see if it works for you, personally. Some scents are floral, some are woody, and some are blended, and so forth, so you'll need to explore what scents work best with your body chemistry.
After you find a scent you like that smells great on you, you'll need to learn how to apply it well. Make sure that it is subtle and not overpowering, so that the people around you are able enjoy your new perfume. A dab of fragrance to what are called the pulse points is usually more than enough. Pulse points are where the blood vessels are closest to the skin, like the wrists, neckline, behind ears, and behind the knee.
At Total Beauty, we offer plenty of tips and tricks to help you select the best perfume for you, learn how to apply your fragrance, and change your scent with the seasons. By using our expert advice, you'll love wearing the fragrances you find.
