9 Essential Tools for Curly Hair

You know those curly hair commercials that preach to us about "embracing" our natural, kinky hair? The ones that make it look so easy to get those soft, shiny (never frizzy!), bouncy curls? As someone who has styled a head full of kinky-curly hair my entire life, I see those commercials and think the same thing: yeaaaah, right.   read more

Fear of Commitment? The Hairstyle for Swingers

Every time I see a photo of a celeb with newly-chopped short hair, I immediately think, "I need to cut my hair NOW." Sadly, following through on that threat has never ended well for me. Anyone remember Ashley Olsen's angled bob? Yeah, I got that haircut. I loved it for, oh, about two weeks ... until I realized my long hair would take forever and three years to grow back. I vowed I would never get a short haircut again (Ditto: bangs. That was an even bigger disaster). But then Karlie Kloss had to go and get the cutest, chicest bob ever (Why, Karlie? Why are you tempting me to do something I know won't end well for me?). The last straw was Claire Danes' straight-up perfect bob at the Emmys. I was on the verge of heading to my hairstylist when I found out it was faux.   read more

17 Best Heat Styling Products

Stop damaging your hair. No really, stop. You're only hurting yourself here. We know you're shivering when you jump out of the shower and that you just want to blast your hair with that warm blow dryer of yours, but if you care at all about having healthy hair, you will throw on a robe and do the right thing: properly prep your hair for heat styling. Any hair care expert will tell you that in order to prevent hair damage and breaking, it is crucial to apply some sort of heat protecting hair care product like a spray, serum, mousse or cream before subjecting your strands to high temperatures from irons and dryers.   See products

Easy Long Hairstyles for a Rainy Day

When I wake up and see rain coming down outside, my first thought is, "Well, I'm going to look like crap today." I've never seen a point in really doing my hair if the rain and humidity will turn it into a frizzy, droopy heap in 60 seconds. I go for the classic, easy (okay, lazy) rainy day hair: a quick topknot or messy bun.   read more

The Hottest Beauty Trends for Spring 2014

What's the best thing about the spring 2014 beauty trends I spotted backstage at New York Fashion Week? They're super simple. The overall theme I spotted: natural makeup (sometimes with a statement lip or major mascara), bare nails, and barely-done hair. So when you want to take a break from fall's deep, rich looks (think: punk eyeliner and berry lip stain), brush up on the hair, makeup, and nails you'll be wearing soon enough.   read more

Hairstyles Guide and Information

Most women are constantly looking for new hairstyles -- whether it's to reinvent the way they look or for a special occasion. Each person is different, and choosing the right hairstyles to fit them will depend on the person's face shape, hair texture, and the occasion. If you're planning to spend the day at the mall or hang out at your friend's place watching movies, then you'll want to choose hairstyles which are relaxed and casual, and easy to maintain. On the other hand, occasions like weddings or prom demand more elaborate hairstyles, like beautiful updos that are elegant and complement your dress and accessories.

The right hairstyles can accentuate your best facial features while downplaying any flaws, redefining the way you look. The shape of your face can help determine the kind of hairstyles that will suit you best. For instance, if you have a round face, you might consider wearing your hair long to minimize the width of your face. However, if you have a longer face, you'll look great in hairstyles that are short with sweeping bangs which will give a wider appearance to your face.

To choose a cut that will best suit your style, look at pictures of other women who have similar faces and features to you, and who also have hairstyles that you like. More importantly, choose hairstyles that will help you feel comfortable, even if you're not conforming to all the rules.

With step-by-step instructional videos and articles on hairstyles at Total Beauty, you'll get expert advice and plenty of tips on hairstyles that are easy to create. You'll have lots of new hairstyles to discover each week, so you can create the look you want whenever you chose.
