Worst Hairstyles for Women Over 40
Get the wrong cut or color and you could look 10 years older -- or like a wannabe tween
Hair Don't: Ashy color
Yes, that ashy blonde shade looked amazing when you were 20, but now that you're a little older and wiser, it's time to move on. "The problem is that women do not allow their tone and their color to evolve with their age," says Cutler Senior Stylist David Kastin.
Ashy hair color has cooler undertones, which can look almost gray -- especially when you're actually old enough to have gray hair. Plus, the cooler tones can make you look paler, like Cynthia Nixon does here. Kristin Chenoweth is over-compensating for this effect with copious amounts of self-tanner, but there's an easier solution ...

Very good article. At age 40 something we sometimes forget that even though we may not that age,we look it to everyone! Good common sense tips! Thanks!

I think darker hair looks better on older women. Age shows on Blondes

Turning 40 this year and keeping my long hair. Maybe a good cut but keeping it long. No need to chop it.

I agree with the suggestions in this story, but as for women who aren't certain how to "grow" their style with their spiritual/physical growth rather than assuming that your guidelines apply to every woman. My most challenging style "item" has been my hair. I have very thick, very fine hair that can't be forced to be wavy, curly, feathered, spiral-curled, nor turned into "big hair." It took several years of frustration, having "root perms" and "body perms" (as well as normal perms); buying dozens of mousses, hair sprays and styling gels; spending sleepless nights with plastic rollers (the pins poked my scalp); and burning my fingers with hot rollers and curling irons before I stopped fighting and I finally decided to work with what the good Lord gave me. "My" hair style is a classic side-parted bob (no bangs) cut to about 1" below my earlobes; the ends curve inward pageboy-style. It gets a little bounce and shine from a color glaze of medium warm tones and Infusium 23 leave-in conditioner, My hair is very dry, another reason why I keep it short; I also reduce the amount of blow-drying (plus I don't try dry completely). REQUEST: could you writye an article on getting the appropriate look for eye makeup for us 40+ customers?

Completely disagree on almost every statement. I have long hair. What when we reach 40 we are supposed to shorn our femininity? Hair color, whether ashy blonde or vivid red works well as long as the skin color works with it. An ashy blonde on a young, pale person looks just as bad. What outright arrogance. Wear what looks best on YOU, no matter what age you are.
