Disagree with many points. Yes, it is ridiculous to buy a moisturizer for your hands and elbows and another for your feet. But SPF, toner, body-firming products, and face masks have absolute, proven benefits (for instance, toner adjusts the skins natural pH back to its slightly acidic level and removes the last traces of makeup and grime).

I disagree with the SPF, the body firming, toner, face mask...each of these products has shown me significant results and/or have preserved youthful skin. Also, they provide that extra beauty ritual that makes one happy...and the best accessory for beauty is a smile. I disagree with the SPF. I live in Brazil and I go often to the beach. When I use SPF 30 I my skin gets red and burned, my skin aches. When I use SPF 80 my skin gets tanned but not burned and doesn't ache.

I disagree with the hydrating serum being "fluff". I have aging skin where dark spots, etc are a concern. I have combination skin that leans a little more toward the oily rather than dry so a hydrating serum is perfectly light enough to not add more unnecessary oils. I guess it depends on the person and the specific skin type.

Most anti-aging and acne treatments include a toner, and I've used them on and off for years. In some situations, they're beneficial. In others, I do feel they're unnecessary. Everyone's skin is different, we should all do what is absolutely best for us.

In reality, toners and serums can be very beneficial for the skin as long as they are high in antioxidants, cell communicating ingredients, and skin repairing ingredients, which will be left on the skin and absorbed. Also, if the skin type on the face differs from that on the neck/chest, i would not recommend using the same product for both parts. Yet, the same product used on the body can be used on all parts of the body.

Fabulous Article-So I'm going to the poor house for nothing- What really made a lot of sense was the hype about face, neck and other body parts which special creams are meant to restore the fountain of youth-but I do feel that if a cream costs an arm and a leg-and there is a limit to what we should pay then we are ready to go on to the next step and see a professional about what bothers us. I have done some procedures which I knew no cream in the world would help. We must use our brains when it comes to all the hype of "the fountain of youth" cream.

This is certainly an extremely informative article-what's true is we can get extremely obsessed with aging and will definitely try the "newest miracle cream" and then look for signs of age reversal-so maybe we may see some difference but in the long run the clock is still ticking and then non-surgical and surgical procedures are the only answer. So-we should save our "expensive cream money" for the procedure that will make a difference.

I beg to differ with your opinion, based on my own experience. Before I tried Arbonne products, I would have agreed with you, because nothing else on the market has made any difference in wrinkles and moisturization levels, and I've tried products from Nivea to Revlon to Estee Lauder to Philosophy and more expensive products. Much of the American-formulated products are full of fillers, animal products, chemicals and fragrances and not much more. My Arbonne products are all botanical and full of Vitamin C. My experience and the comments of others prove that they work.

Correct. If you use a good cleanser you should not need a toner, otherwise you will find that useing a toner will remove more dirt and debri from your skin. Just cleanse properly and you will same a step in time and also the money it would have cost you to take an extra step! Don't worry about the ph of your skin, it only takes a few minutes and it will go back on its own.

Well said. There are ingredients that are beneficial for the skin and they can be obtained for less money or more money. But if you want something manufactured by a 'highend' name you will have to pay waaayyyyy more for the name than the actual product. I figured out that Witch Hazel is perfect for me when I need a toner and it is much less expensive than the cosmetic lines offer. I buy a moderately priced eye cream and good facial moisturizer, but I've never subscribed to the idea that women need different creams and lotions for all different parts of their body. One body lotion is sufficient for everything from my shoulders down except that my feet require a heavier duty cream because they are really dry. To me, it is more important to have a good, non-drying cleanser and a sunscreen to protect my face from burning rays. I could be a real product junkie and a "clothes horse" but I realized that there are other good things in life to save and spend money on (like vacations)!

I think most of this is good advice - but my skin just doesn't feel right without my toner. I don't have oily skin - it's actually normal to dry - but if I don't use my toner and just put on moisturizer after washing my face, my skin just doesn't feel right, the pH is all off. But then I'm not using toner as an extra step to clean anything off - I'm using it for the "tone" I suppose. Also, I use a charcoal mask every week (sometimes twice a week) and it definitely seems to help my skin, not as many clogged pores since I started using it. With sunscreen - the problem is, SPF isn't the only important thing. SPF is only the UVB protection. UVA rays penetrate your skin deeper, and that is what causes wrinkles and aging and sun damage. UVA is also the main tanning ray. UVB is what will cause you to burn, and really only affects the topmost layer of skin. NOT all sunscreens have adequate UVA protection! The US is finally starting to have some kind of labeling for UVA protection, where as Asian and European markets have had this for years. If you are serious about sun protection, do your research people!

I agree that a good face cream can make it for the neck too...instead of buying several different creams, use the same one, you will finish it quicker, so you can be sure to always have fresh supply...however, to not forget neck is a very sensitive area and if you have, for example, oily skin on your face and use an astringent cream for your face and pores, it will not be good for your neck!!! Not everybody is a professional for being able to understand these differences, this is why the cosmetics companies are making different products!! Or, use only the night cream, which, by definition, has more nutrients inside its active principles.

I like using toner because sometimes my cleanser does not take off all my make up [or I'm tired and miss a spot while washing]. My skin on my nose sometimes gets flaky and when I use toner it removes all the gunk and makes it smooth again too. I guess it just depends on your skin type but I agree with not spending thousands of dollars on creams! Just make sure you read the ingredients on everything you put all over your face. I disagree with some of the info such as toners and masks. Of course, with anything it's personal preference. Toners help to keep skin clean, removing what your cleanser left behind or the cleanser itself. If your cleanser is effective you may not need toner but I feel it's a good backup cleanser to insure your skin is clean. Toner also gently exfoliates regularly when used with a cotton pad or cotton ball. It pH balances the skin, can be hydrating or oil-controlling (depending on what your skin needs) and helps serum/treatment/moisturizer to absorb better when used right after. As for the mask, it's a mini facial by refining pores, smoothing, softening texture of skin as long as you use the right mask for your skin. It's temporary and the effects may only last a few days before you have to mask again but it helps to keep your skin looking and feeling healthy.

Whoever wrote this article needs to do MORE RESEARCH. You obviously haven't used a good skin care system...it's real obvious. Thousands of people who have can tell you they work. I've used 3 different very good brands and I can tell you when you use them as directed you will see improvements in your skin. Some more than others. Another thing, whatever you put on your skin gets into your bloodstream, so use products wtih natural botanicals instead of chemicals. We're exposed to way to many chemicals everyday. Did you ever read the research on parabens in skin care products? If you read food labels before you purchase them then why not read the ingredient labes of what you are putting on your body? I agree - the facial mask thing is wrong. I can tell a HUGE difference in my skin after using one. Even with all the exfoliating I do, a mask really clarifies and cleans and smooths, and makes my makeup go on better and then I look better. A stupid man must've written that. Or a woman who's never used a mask.

I disagree with the toner, and mask comments. Both are necessary and toner removes left over cleanser, and dirt.

I totally disagree with the facial mask being unnecessary. I see a BIG difference in the tone and surface of my skin after use. They are very beneficial to the cleansing of the pores and lift dry skin from the surface that normal cleansing doesn't touch.

I don't agree with the SPF mention by Lancer. SPF indicate the time factor you can stay without reapplying sunscreen. It depends of your skin. If your skin get sunburn after 2 minutes, a SPF 30 will give you 60 minutes of protection. If you come from Canada, right to the beach of miami in the middle of january, you will probably get a sunburn within 30 seconds of exposure. Be careful to the SPF and reapply more often

Because I have oily skin I have to use a toner, maybe I'll just invest in a cheaper one. The creams that are supposed to "reverse" aging or remove dimples, well, I kind already knew those weren't going to work. Creams can't do everything. And about that masks...hmmm...that one broke my heart a little. I LOVE masks! :) And even though I KNEW that any sunscreen over 30 wasn't going to do much I still use up to SPF 70 because of my job. Going from the East coast to extreme heat is enough to freak me out. I guess it gives me a false sense of security...But otherwize, great article!

yes, I agree with most...and I have found the most fantastic all over body moisture lotion...AmLACTIN it's fantastic , fades the spots...makes my arms look like baby skin...

I definitely don't agree with the facial masks. Those can be very beneficial, depending on the type you use. Acne prone skin and oily skin especially can benefit from a good mask. Everything else in this article is good stuff. Ps- If you're stuck on a need for toner, and want to save a little money, try simple rubbing alcohol or witch hazel...does the same thing... :)

I agree. All I use is my Philosophy Cleanser, Hope in a Jar and I exfoliate my face really good once a week. No toners and all that other stuff and my skin at 43 looks better than most 30 year olds.

I like using my toner. It is apricot scented and makes my face feel extra clean after my cleanser. Whenever I use it I always wipe off at least a tiny spot of dirt.
