Sally Hershberger famously gave Meg Ryan the "Sally Shag" in 1996, and she soon became the first celebrity stylist to offer a $600 haircut to the general public. (Her fee has since gone up.) Hershberger generally cuts hair when it's dry, using a razor to shape layers. While her signature cut has evolved over the years, she's still the woman to see if you want a shag. "The reason that I love the shag so much is that it really emphasizes layers," says Hershberger. "Anything that has movement is considered shag."

Hershberger has a product line available at drugstores -- one of the bestsellers is Sally Hershberger Supreme Head Shagg Spray, $12.99 -- as well as a high-end line called Salon by Sally Hershberger.

What a disappointment. Only celebrities and the wealthy can afford $400-$600 for a haircut!! This is a terrible article which should never have appeared on TB. It is completely inappropriate for your audience.

Fekkai never disappoints me. Verrrry pricey but so worth it. That's my go to guy. Always has been. Always will be. I have put a great deal of faith in others, and always go back. No contest.

I agree with another reviewer that the HAIRSTYLES to try before you die would be more helpful and interesting for most readers. I don't plan on ever paying $600+ for a haircut.

i was disapointed in this because i misread it. I was hoping for hairSTYLES to try before you die, not stylists. I'll never pay that much for a haircut.

They may be considered the "best" in their field, but there's no way I'd be able to afford any of them. Plus, I'd rather buy myself some new clothes or something else.

Okay, I think we all agree none of us can take part of our mortgage payment and use it for a haircut. Here's an idea, why doesn't Total Beauty have a contest where some of us could win a haircut with one of these "stylists to the stars?!?!?!"

I have been blessed w/some of the best & brightest, tho not pictured here; Oscar Bandi's work is NOTHING to pay big bucks for. BOARING! The hair-do U put up w/Sally Hershberger is also mediocre & I would b very angry if she did my hair like that, I recall how Frederique F screwed up Mrs. Clinton's hair when she was 1st Lady. One-length indeed. Oribe is great for special affairs. Garren is also excellent. I think your editor choose a bad time to run this story with our economy in such bad shape. One of the best cutters I've ever had, I found at an "avant-garde" Philadelphia Salon w/very affordable but beautiful work! Folks, talent is not restricted to a stuffy social register salon. You see a waitress, a classmate, etc, whose hair you like, just ASK. The gals who work the cosmetic counters at your local dept. stores are wonderful sources of info re affordable, but stylish hair care. They have to look better than average, and they have to be able to clone what their stylist intended. The modeling agencies in your town are another good reference. Warren-Tricomi is an A-list salon, however they also give classes to junior stylists, and you can ask about being a demo model for Warren Tricomie or ask if they are giving advanced education workshops.

I would love to spend that kind of dough on my hair! And if I could afford it.... I would! Nothing beats a high end salon with high end hairstylists working their magic! Chris McMillan is the one I would go see. Jennifer Anniston always has gorgeous hair (however, I never really liked the "Rachel")!

I used to work for Edward Tricomi and I used to see Frederic Fekkai. Edward is certainly amazing with scissors and he does work magic with your hair. It's worth the astronomical cost. Frederic in my opinion, was the master though. He is absolutely genius and I haven't gotten a better cut since moving out of Manhattan!
