These seem like smaller cities/towns so it's not too surprising.

haha i used to live in montana and it's true that very very veryyyy few people have a tattoo. now that i think about it, i dont think i even knew anybody there who did have one!!

Most people with body art are proud because the art has meaning or a story. Many of the people I know including myself are happy to answer questions or even sometimes explain why a certain art piece was chosen. So if you are curious ask, it could put your questions to rest. Just know that many people before getting tattooed had a lot of the same questions as you and generally will be happy to describe the procedure to you. As for if it hurts I would equate it to a sunburn, But each person is different and a professional artist can help you know what areas are the most and least painful.

To say "99% of all tat wearers are uneducated ignorant dolts" is foolish and close minded. Forgive me but I don't see any logic in making up statistics just to get your point across. You have no idea about any one other then yourself and perhaps you should remind yourself of that before you begin to insult others, because to do so is, in fact, ignorant. It's not your body so why should you have a say? I have four myself, a frog for my grandmother who died which doubles as a friendship tattoo for my best friend from high school, tiger lilies for a past boyfriend who passed away, a celtic symbol that means protection because of everything I've had to deal with in my life and a sun to remind me that things can always be better. How can you tell me I'm wrong to have these marks that remind me of my life and past. I'm proud to wear them and yet for some reason this make me less?

My Beautiful Neice got a lot of them on her legs when she was younger. Then she went to college and got a High paying job with the goverment and was unable to wear skirts or dresses without wearing very dark tights. She is now in the process of getting them removed. I personally think you should think long and hard before getting one. They are permanent and very expensive and time consuming to get them removed.

I don't do tattoos and don't like them on others. Someone asked something about wearing clothes & makeup. Don't think the makeup is permanent and clothes are removable so comparing them as "altering" your appearance is not a good argument. Most men I've dated do not like them and view them as trashy. I agree that most older people who have them regret getting them. I see people like Kat VonD as disgusting.

Someone did some poor research. I can think of more than 6 tattoo shops in Anchorage, not to mention a notable tattoo artist.

Tattoos have always been a lifestyle choice for people who live in cities with active seaports traditionally, .sailors wore a solid gold earring so their shipmates could pay for their burial if they died far from home. They were probably tattooed so that they could be identified if they fell overboard and drowned without anybody knowing it days or weeks later. It's a cute article, but I bet tattoos are part of a regional tradition that's totally absent in say, Kansas or North Dakota.

I don't know which is funnier: the pearl-clutching tone of this article (and most of the comments!) or the fact that it could double as a list of the most boring cities is the US. Tattoos are like any other kind of art or fashion statement: beautiful when they display intelligence, taste, and care, and tacky when they don't. The ignorance and squeamishness on display here make me glad to live in a city where people value all kinds of artistic expression. Oh, and the title should be "Cities with the FEWEST Tattoos."

"You never see older adults that are proud of their tattoos." Go find a veteran who served our country and chances are he or she will have gotten a tattoo while serving. Ask him or her if they're proud of that ink.

I think most of the people who have commented don't like tattoos because "I"m narrow-minded" is the only statement to describe them, and for some reason that's not appealing. Do you wear clothes? Well, that covers up your precious temple of a body. Do you wear make-up? That's modifying your body. What about corrective eyewear, corrective surgeries, cosmetic surgeries, etc.? If you can think badly of someone based on a picture on their skin, it's obviously you that has a problem.

I've noticed how most of the people who comment on this article are "people who hate tattoos" well i'm sure there are 600 things that people with tattoos hate about you, including your bigotry. If you are losing sleep at night and really fretting because someone else has tattoos you need to find something else to do with your life. I have tattoos, i'm in law school and worked for several successful large firms as a paralegal before that. If you want people to see them put them in place that clothing covers or wear appropriate clothing. I would encourage you all to get over your 1950's stereotype, I wouldn't be surprised if the people who left negative comments about tattoos also think that African Americans are all thieves and that all Hispanics pick oranges. You know "what won't get you hired" and be a quality that won't find you a partner? Having a closed mind and expressing your hatred for the differences in others, now THAT is a truly unattractive quality.

I think tattoos are great! They make it easy it identify people I don't want to hang out with, girls I don't want to seriously date and potential employees I won't hire! I think I may get into the tattoo removal business... A lot of you will be begging to see me in the next ten to twenty years!

tattoo dont make you look trashy if someone wants to get a tattoo let them;; its their body and your free to do what you want with it;; getting tattoo's is just like having a sex all the time with your spouse;; is that trashy? no because it behind closed doors;; the only difference is that tattoos define who someone is;; so why take that away from them? is a butterfly or rose tattoo considered "trashy" ot "whore-ish" no because there cute;; so why judge some one by the outside of their body;; like people say;; YOU SHOULD'NT JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER;; SO DONT JUDGE PEOPLE BY THEIR LOOK.

Styles always come and go, which really makes me wonder if in another 10-20 years, is a "tramp stamp" or "tribal flames" gonna seem more dated & tacky (yet longer-lasting), than an 8-track tape, tattooed eyebrows, or a bouffant hair-do?

No matter what your size, color, height, shape or weight, your body is a divinely created living sculpture. To mark it up with tattoos cheapens it, and when people do it from head to toe makes you seriously wonder what they were thinking. It's like giving a 3 year a marker and letting him/her have a go at a Monet, Gogh or Picasso. Also the tattoo that looks so cool at 18 may not be as endearing at 60, and unless something happens, you and the tattoo will still be together at 60.

If people want to get tattoos, that's their decision. I'd prefer someone whose tattoos mean something, like mine are for my family. I don't feel that judging someone because they have a tattoo is fair, because it's a stereotype too. Sure, there are dumb people who get tattoos as well as dumb people who don't get them. Besides, you only live once, why are you going to limit yourself?

Tattoos are beautiful if done correctly but it is down to personal taste, disliking someone for one is just silly, it's like hating someone for their dress sense or hair style. either way it's just superficial. My dad is a tattoo artist and i have great respect for the art form. also gorgie porgie, a tramp stamp is usually in reference to a lower back symmetrical tattoo.

Really, they are just lame. What statement needs to be on your body, permanently? For the most part tattoos are a way of getting a little attention from someone, even if it is only a single someone, its for attention. They are not so personal, they serve to advertise something, be it your ideals or the name of a lost loved one, if you are getting a tattoo, its for attention and like I said thats just lame.
