Cuticle remedy Not all terrifying beauty tips come from ancient times, and proving it is the recent phenomenon of fish pedicures. Salon owners in Europe, China and Japan import "Doctor Fish," or Garra rufa, small fish belonging to the carp family, and let them feed on the dead skin cells of your feet. Who needs a pumice stone when you have fish to do the dirty work? It should be warned that regulators in many US states have banned fish pedicures for being unsanitary, since the same fish feed on many customers.

I agree with all of these except for the last one. I got this done when I was in singapore and it was really fun! It left my feet extremely soft and I only felt a light ticking sensation. I really wish you could get this done in Canada or the USA

smooth away or whatever it's called that you rub on your skin and the hairs come off: It's sandpaper. A very fine grade of it, but sandpaper nevertheless. So people still use some of these today lol

Carmine is still found in quite a few cosmetics, particularly lipsticks. It's in high-end lip and cheek stains as well. Carmine is made from insects. From wikipedia: "To prepare carmine, the powdered scale insect bodies are boiled in ammonia or a sodium carbonate solution, the insoluble matter is removed by filtering, and alum is added to the clear salt solution of carminic acid to precipitate the red aluminium salt, called "carmine lake" or "crimson lake." Once you find that out, you have to wonder how many beetles you ate when licking the lipstick off your lips since you started wearing lipcolor as a teen.

I must say that I have tried many different things in my 40 some years, but never would I go to the extreme measures that they have in history. The Dr. Fish pedicure I have always wanted to try. I don't wear makeup, & feel that your skin is, besides your smile, is the most beautiful part of the human body because it's says so much without saying A word. I started taking care of my skin when I was just 12. I feel that y you cannot replace your skin, so take care of it as best you can. Your face is A canvas, & you want A beautiful canvas to start with.

Yikes - and I thought being beautiful and keeping myself groomed was a pain in this day and age! By the way, many cosmetics (red lipstick especially, I believe) do still use carmine, which comes from bugs. So that one is still kinda done these days. It won't kill you or make you sick, just one of those odd things most people don't think about!

If you know your chemistry, you'd be surprised at the nasty and dangerous stuff you'd find in your own cosmetics today. Not to mention what some of those chemicals break down into! I wonder if people will look back on some of our beauty regimens and think them as barbaric?
