Similar to carbs, Metsovas says we tend to crave sugar when we're low on energy. This lack of energy can be attributed to diet, in which case you should load up on superfoods like kale, blueberries, sweet potatoes, fish, and raw nuts and seeds, she says.
However, "if your diet is considered healthy and you still crave sugary foods, I recommend investigating your overall health by scheduling a screening with your doctor," Metsovas says. There could be other factors, like hypoglycemia, diabetes, or thyroid issues contributing to your sugar binges.
