Take a stroll down the frozen food aisle at your local grocery store and you'll be surrounded by boxes with dishes that look deceptively appetizing (hello Photoshop) -- and have tempting labels like "low fat," "light," and "high protein." But are any of these "healthy" frozen dinners actually good for you?
As a smart shopper, you've hopefully learned to take all product packaging with a sizeable grain of salt, but frozen meals in particular can trip you up with misleading labels and hidden health horrors. "Most frozen meals are high in sugar and sodium, contain tons of preservatives, and don't have much to offer in terms of fruits, vegetables, or fiber," says Laura Cipullo, a registered dietician and certified diabetes instructor in New York City.
While that news is a bit depressing for all of us too time-crunched to do more than pop a frozen dinner in the microwave, there is some hope. For every chemical-laden, fat-filled meal out there, there is a comparable option with better ingredients, less fat, and even a few veggies thrown in for good measure. Check out this list of the 10 worst frozen food offenders, along with healthier frozen dinners that still taste delicious.
Ugh! I am so skeeved out by most frozen foods or pretty much anything that is quick and you can toss in the microwave. Most of that stuff has so much sodium in it that it scares me. I know its time consuming to cool a meal from scratch but I'm starting to think that it may be worth it in the end.
I am grossed out by the stats given here and very dissapointed in many of these brands. I don't eat frozen foods as a rule but many of my family members do. I will be passing this info on!
I would have like to try the suggestions but even in a big city area, I don't see many of these brands. I have to admit part of my eating frozen food depends on the taste and not as much the calories or amount of ingredients. I do prefer less artificial, but I try to make pre-packaged foods healthier by adding fresh ingredients to them and herbs.
Don't forget plain old frozen veggies (no sauce)!!! They are flash frozen and retain a lot of their original vitamins and minerals. They are also low calorie. Sometimes when the munchie gremlin is vexing me, I will nuke and eat a large portion of frozen green beens, broccoli, or edammes or something. It fills you up enough to from snarfing too much higher, empty calorie options. The "worst" frozen foods are just mind boggling. It is a great idea to always read the label--even on what you percieve to be healthy (goes for cosmetics, too).
Frozen foods taste way too salty for me. If I down break down and have a lazy frozen meal night it is always a stuffed crust pizza. If I am going to eat junk I go for something delicious haha
I'm not surprised to see a lot of brands here, but hearing that Amy's and EVOL don't always measure up is surprising. That's why it always pays to check the label.
If you haven't tried Amy's, it's one of the larger vegetarian companies out there that has a lot of frozen food options and convenience meals for those who are trying to eat healthier. Amy's is normally pretty easy to find in most supermarkets. Sometimes it's in the organic or health food aisle.
My main problem with this article is that they recommend several Amy's products and talk about how great Amy's tastes. Have they never tasted Amy's? It is disgusting. There are several great tasting healthy frozen food company's (including EVOL which is mentioned in the article) so why include one that tastes so bad.
i'm not surprised banquet meals are on this list. they all seem very cheap and the meat always seems like it's made from mystery meat. not very tasty at all.
Good to know, I was definitely biased in assuming that all Kashi foods were good, but apparently not. I'm assuming the alternative suggestions are the 10 best foods.
I agree completely with the previous reviewer. Was just getting ready to ask what happened to the 10 best when I read her review and found out. Dumb way to present this information - especially if you actually WANT us to find the "good stuff"!
I always knew that frozen foods werent th healthiest choice, but those look gross! Not appealing to me AT ALL. Looks like i have nothing to worry about
This will definitely make me take a better look at the information on the back of these containers instead of going, "Ohhhh! That looks yummy!" and being done with it.
