Failing to Lose Weight? Maybe It's Because You're the Wrong Age

A new poll suggests that you're most likely to shed excess pounds at certain (precise) point in your life

Indulge me a few queries.

Been trying in vain to lose weight? To shed pounds? To squeeze back into those "skinny" jeans?

Next question: Are you 32?

No? That could very well be the problem.

According to a (somewhat dubious -- especially since I'm 43) study conducted by a diet supplement company called Forza, 32 is the optimum age to embark on -- and stick to -- a diet.

Having surveyed 1,000 wannabe thinner men and women, Forza was able to determine that "turning 30 is a watershed moment in their lives and they wanted to stay fit and healthy as they leave their 20s." Forza's managing director Lee Smith sees the correlation; "The ageing process starts to catch up with us all and both sexes are desperate to turn back the clock," he says.

The mid-30s and 40s are out because, according to the folks polled, as "middle age" sets in, we're less likely to "care about our appearance." 59 percent of the same pollees said that trying to lose weight in your 20s is a waste of time because "you're more likely to be single and party more."

The preponderance of females polled (37 percent) said that 32 was the perfect age for shedding excess poundage -- especially because of the increased likelihood that they'd become mothers by then. "Losing baby weight is a powerful incentive," 56 percent admitted that they found it easier to stick to a diet plan after having had kids than before. Smith adds that, "This is certainly true of the typical Forza dieter who is a young mom in her early 30s keen to lose a bit of weight after starting a family."

Similarly, 4 of 10 respondents (42 percent) said that marriage curbed their appetites; they were less inclined to overeat or imbibe. Certainly doesn't jibe with the image we have of married folks getting complacent once they say, "I do" and no longer have to worry about fitting into the wedding dress and/or attracting a mate.

Think there's any validity to the opinions expressed by the poll results? Do they mesh with your personal ideas?
