We Tried it: A Frizz-Fighting Conditioning Hair Mask

Plagued by dry, dull, damaged hair? Our reviewer puts a rich hair mask to the test

I've tried my fair share of deep conditioners and leave-in creams, but I've never fallen in love with any product so much that I used it religiously. I have chronically frizzy, too-thick hair, and no "frizz-free" or smoothing products have ever worked for me. I've tried Macadamia Natural Oil's Deep Repair Mask (which didn't leave my hair smooth for long) and Brazilian Blowout's Acai Deep Conditioning Mask (which lost its smoothing quality as soon as I rinsed). Most deep hair conditioners leave my hair feeling soft and smooth in the shower, but once I towel-dry my hair and let it air-dry, my hair feels exactly the same as it does after a regular shampooing. So, what's the point? I approached Keratherapy's Keratin Infused Deep Conditioning Masque with the same enthusiasm. Would another conditioning hair treatment fail to deliver on its promise?

Color me surprised. Keratherapy's hair mask kept my hair soft even after I washed it out and tamed some of my frizz. Its promise of being "formulated to reconstruct, repair, hydrate, strengthen and smooth hair" actually rang true for the most part (sadly, no at-home product can cure my frizzies completely).

The trick is applying the hair mask from root to tip and letting it sit in your hair for a good five minutes before washing it out. For a big, bushy head of hair like mine, it only took a quarter-sized dollop of the mask to work its magic. I diligently followed the instructions on the bottle and used it on my frizzy hair twice a week, which left my hair feeling soft and clean between washes. The directions also list an "intensive treatment" option: apply the hair mask, put on a shower cap, and sit under heat for 30 minutes. Unless you have a salon dome dryer at home, this is a tough feat to pull off. I avoid blow drying my hair at all costs (my arms actually get sore!), but the express application twice a week worked just fine on my frizzy, unruly hair. Bonus: this hair mask left my hair smelling fantastic for days. Because I get so frizzy, I only wash my hair every other day, but my paranoia of having oily, funky roots dissolved after using this product. On a "second day" of not washing, a friend even complimented me on how good my hair smelled. And at the rate I'm using it now, the 8 oz. bottle, which costs around $22, should last about 2 months -- a great value for the investment.
