Go Ahead, Answer the Door; Gluten Free Girl Scout Cookies Are A-Knocking

The Girls in green have hitched their cookie cart to the gluten-free bandwagon

The Girl Scouts organization may be 107 years old, but Juliette Gordon Low's stalwart troupe is anything but senescent -- especially when it comes to moving those little green boxes of goodness.

With everything from the new COCOMobile app that lets you locate nearby cookie stands, to ever-evolving sales tactics (a local entrepreneur left behind a doorknob hangtag to say she was sorry to have missed me, but here was her info if I had a hankering for some Thin Mints), the Girl Scouts are clearly chameleons who change with the times.

It should come as no surprise then that the Scouts, with more than a little help from its two commercial bakers, have added a gluten-free goodie to their assortment of 28 cookie offerings.

Of this "Chocolate Chip Shortbread" pilot program, ABC Bakers, purveyors of GS goodies since 1936, says, "We believe that everyone should be able to support the Girl Scout Cookie Program. Since it's estimated that three million people have problems when they eat foods that contain gluten, [we] expect this cookie to be a huge success."

This isn't the first time the organization has changed its cookie roster to keep up with the times. Over the years, they've added "healthy" options (like this season's whole grain "Cranberry Citrus" and vegan choices like "Thanks-A-Lot" and "Peanut Butter Patties/Tagalongs*"), which have been welcomed by the cookie-eating community with varying degrees of popularity.

Indeed, the Scouts have long been sensitive to worldwide issues, a point they made clear in 2011 by introducing a new palm oil policy, pledging to support and use only those oils produced in a sustainable manner.

Now, those of you who've been frantically scanning this post for dreaded words like "discontinued" or "ceased production" in association with Samoas a.k.a. Caramel deLites* or (heaven forbid) the aforementioned Thin Mints, can rest at ease. None of the GS Cookie bakers have any intention of retiring those titles or messing with their tried and true formulations. Still, since you never know which health trend is coming round the corner, you might want to stock your coffers (and freezers, have you ever tried a frozen Thin Mint?!?) just to safe.

*Ever wonder why some years your favorite caramel and toasted coconut covered cookies are called "Samoas" and others their branded "Caramel deLites?" You're not going coconuts. Chalk it up to the different bakeries -- each has its own cookie names for the same recipes -- so it just depends on whose batch you get.
