"My daughter is so ugly ... you need to fix her"

See the shocking reason why parents are pushing their kids into plastic surgery

All of the hubbub about how far apart your eyes are set, the shape of your nose and facial features that make you marriage material -- it makes our skin crawl to read all of the research and fuss about these so-called beauty ideals. But this one made us want to cry: Asian parents are pushing their kids into plastic surgery so they look more Caucasian.

In an article on CNN.com, Detroit plastic surgeon Anthony Youn shared his shocking experiences of parents who are insisting on totally unnecessary surgeries to give their kids different facial features, like smaller noses, folded eyelids and squarer jaws. "I find that the older generation often pushes younger people to have work done. I've met several Korean parents in their 50s and older...who have no qualms about encouraging their children to undergo plastic surgery," said Youn.

One woman walked into Dr. Youn's office seeking plastic surgery for her daughter. "My daughter is so ugly. You need to fix her ugly nose, open up her eyes and give her a double fold of her eyelids," she told Youn.

We use the word "fix" when we're talking about a leaky sink. A flat tire. A busted heel. It should never be used in reference to a teenager's face, much less by her mother.

Dr. Youn said the trend in adolescent plastic surgery is all about making Asian kids look more like "us" in the West. "The majority of facial cosmetic operations performed on Asians are considered 'Westernizing' procedures," said Youn. "Two of the most popular, nose jobs (rhinoplasty) and eyelid lifts (blepharoplasty), are specially designed to make these features look more Caucasian." Sick!

It's bad enough when women feel pressured to go under the knife to attain certain beauty ideals, but it's horrific to think of parents pushing their kids into these risky, unnecessary surgeries. Think about it: at a certain age, their features haven't even fully developed, and these kids are being called ugly at time when they are most self-conscious. Nice parenting skills, people. These surgeries aren't cheap, either. Hope these parents are saving up for therapy bills, too.

Should doctors just say no to parents who ask for this plastic surgery? Or do parents have the right to have these Westernizing surgeries performed on their kids?
