How to Get a Natural, Light Makeup Look

Use these beauty tips and learn how to create a light makeup look for any occasion

The natural, light makeup look is an inspired choice whether you're heading to the office, running daily errands, or just seeking a bit of coverage that doesn't overwhelm. It has the effect that you aren't even wearing makeup (also known as no-makeup makeup) and enhances your natural skin tone. Here is how to get a beautiful makeup look that appears completely natural.

Work With Your Skin's Natural Color

The first step is to work with your skin's natural hue. To create a flawless light makeup look, choose a foundation that is as close to your natural skin color as possible. Blend it out evenly across your face and use concealer to cover up breakouts and dark circles under your eyes. If you don't like the heavy coverage of foundation, choose a tinted moisturizer with SPF, such as pur~lisse BB Tinted Moist Cream SPF 30, $32.

The natural, light makeup look is especially easy to achieve when your face has some shine to it. If your skin is lacking in this regard, moisturize regularly and especially before applying foundation.

Use Neutral Eye Shadow Hues

Apply neutral eye shadow hues on your eyelids. To start, use a shadow that is slightly darker than your skin's natural tone all over your lids. Add a light, shimmery color to highlight the brow bone and the inner corners of your eyes.

Enhance Your Eyes With Mascara

A bit of mascara can enhance your neutral, light makeup look. The trick is applying it so that it doesn't draw attention to itself. Use brown mascara if you have blonde hair, and use a brownish black color if you have darker hair. Avoid using black mascara as it will defeat the natural look you're going for. Curl your lashes and then apply a single coat of mascara to the top lashes.

Strong, Flawless Eyebrows

Keep your eyebrows groomed and neat. Use an eyebrow brush to make sure your brows are neat and lightly run an eyebrow pencil over them to fill them in. For best results, choose a color that is slightly lighter than your natural brow color. After filling them in, blend with the eyebrow brush in upward strokes.

Healthy, Neutral Cheeks

Use blush to give yourself a natural-looking healthy glow. Choose a soft, neutral color, such as Clinique Soft-pressed Powder Blusher in Honey Blush or Totally Tawny, $23, and apply it to the apples of your cheeks. You may also want to use a matte shade instead of a shimmery one for a more natural no-makeup look.

Nude, Natural-Looking Lips

When you're going for a natural, light makeup look, opt for a lip balm that has a touch of color, like Benefits Cosmetics Benebalm Hydrating Tinted Lip Balm, $14, instead of a vibrant lipstick. Another option is to use a nude-colored sheer or creamy lipstick. If you apply a lip gloss, blot it with a tissue after applying to take away the shine and make it appear more natural.
