How to Apply Makeup: Foundation

There is some debate as to whether you should start with foundation or concealer. The answer really depends on the type of products you're using. If you use a powder foundation, it's best to start with the concealer because the foundation will help it to set. Similarly, anyone using a medicated concealer should apply that first. For everyone else, it's a good idea to start with the foundation. Blend your foundation smoothly and gently into your skin to create a smooth base.

How to Apply Makeup: Hiding Dark Circles

You try to get your eight hours of sleep every night, but who are you kidding? To remove those annoying dark circles in the morning, choose a concealer that best matches your skin tone and apply it in small stripes using a pointed concealer brush. If your dark circles are especially noticeable, you can go a shade lighter than your skin tone. Once you've applied your concealer, use the tip of your finger to softly blend it in.

How to Apply Makeup: Concealer

As you likely know, some blemishes refuse to be ignored. To cover up additional spots that remain stubbornly visible despite using foundation, choose a concealer that matches your skin tone. If you went a shade lighter under your eyes, you don't want to use that same shade on the rest of your face. It just won't blend well. Use your ring finger to smoothly pat and blend your concealer.

How to Apply Makeup: Eye Shadow

Next, you will want to apply a shimmering eye base from your lash line to your brow bone for a truly flawless makeup application. It's a good idea to use a cream-based shadow for the base and apply it with your forefinger. If your eyelids are oily, use primer before applying this shadow to prevent crease lines later.

How to Apply Makeup: Eye Shadow

Now that you have your base, use a darker eye shadow color on your eyes to provide more depth. Blend it into the crease of each eyelid with a flat brush, and be sure to avoid the brow bones. Follow up with a soft blending brush to get rid of any harsh edges and blend the darker shade with the base shadow to achieve more natural results. Afterward, add some gold shadow to the centers of your eyelids and run it along your lower lash lines with a fine brush or your fingers. Now you're ready to start turning heads.

How to Apply Makeup: Eyeliner

Use an eyeliner pencil on your upper lash line. Smudge it in an upward fashion with your eye shadow brush to blend it in with your shadow. It's best to choose a pencil that contrasts with your eye color to accentuate the natural hue. For instance, if your eyes are blue, opt for a bronze or brown pencil. If your eyes are brown, consider a khaki green or navy color. When you finish applying, add two layers of black or brown mascara to your eyelashes as well. If you want to give your lashes an extra curl, use an eyelash curler prior to applying mascara.

How to Apply Makeup: Blush

When it comes to blush, you'll need to decide whether you're going for a bold or natural look and choose your color accordingly. Put blush on the apples of your cheeks first, and then blend it up toward your temples with your fingers. Make sure to apply gradually to avoid oversaturation and opt for a cream blush instead of a powder for best results.

How to Apply Makeup: Lipstick

If you're going for a natural look, it's best to choose a matte lipstick. To get an idea of where you should line your lips, apply lipstick first and follow with a lip liner that's a shade darker for full, defined lips. If you're hoping to achieve a bit more shine, choose a gloss lipstick.

Congratulations, you've just learned how to apply makeup for a flawless finish.
