The One Thing That Keeps Elle Macpherson Slim and Glowing

The supermodel opens up about aging (she's 52!), diet and the "beauty product" that keeps her beautiful from the inside out

Supermodel Elle Macpherson is 52 years old but looks -- and has the vitality of someone -- half her age. However, she says she didn't always feel so amazing. In her 40s, her energy levels began to fall, and she started to gain weight. After consulting a nutritionist, she made significant changes in her diet and lifestyle -- adopting a more alkaline nutrition plan and eventually creating her own wellness brand: WelleCo. The brand offers chic canisters of alkalizing greens, plant-based protein powder and even an organic whipped olive oil skin care balm.

With summer upon us, the supermodel answered a few of our most pressing diet and aging questions.

Elle Macpherson

1) TotalBeauty: What's the most important lesson you've learned about aging?

Elle Macpherson: I believe in the power of good nutrition and looking after the body from the inside out. The most important thing to me is how I feel … and I've found if my body is getting the nutrients it needs, then it shows on the outside. When I was in my 20s and 30s, my schedule was so busy with work, travel, children -- I didn't have enough sleep let alone eat well all the time. I found myself run down and fatigued, and as the years go on, I have learned that looking after myself on the inside is key to feeling and looking my best.

2) TB: You're such a beauty icon; who are your beauty icons?

EM: Modern, smart girls like Karlie Kloss are inspiring. Diane Von Furstenberg is a great beauty with great style, and Victoria Beckham for her cool class.

3) TB: What's the most cherished item in your closet?

EM: I have a few -- I recently wore an 80s Azzedine Alaia dress to a friend's wedding in Miami. Everything of his is still relevant and beautiful.

4) TB: What's the best beauty trick you learned as a model?

EM: Sleep, water and good nutrition have had the biggest effect on my beauty regimen. For makeup, I've learned that less is more. A little concealer, fine powder and cheek shine works wonders.

5) TB: What's the one beauty product you absolutely can't live without?

EM: Nobody realizes it is a beauty product, but it is -- water! You can put any number of lotions and potions on the outside, but if your skin is dehydrated it shows. Most of us don't drink enough water every day and are actually dehydrated without knowing.
