How I Green My Home

The crazy things I did to make my house more ecofriendly aren't so crazy after all

A big part of living a more ecofriendly lifestyle is reevaluating your energy and water consumption, which usually starts with the biggest natural-resource-suck of all: Your home. And anyone who's ever opened her monthly bills and had a WTHeck? moment knows that there's always room for improvement in how much water and electricity you use.

We are into greening our home and being more socially responsible. We've made some decisions that have really helped, and here are some additional tips that have been thrown our way.

For instance, if you replace your roof, you may think that white isn't the most attractive roof color -- but how often do you think about the color of your roof, and how often do you wish it's five degrees cooler during the summertime? Aesthetics matter, but not having to melt in crazy summer heat or waste energy cooling the house matters more.

Another thing people are doing is ripping out their lawns. The water shortage in California is no joke, and the L.A. Department of Water and Power actually pays you a fixed amount per square foot to get rid of your grass. Needless to say, fake grass has never looked so good -- and neither has your water bill. Lower water bills? No need to worry about broken sprinklers ever again? Sign me up.

Still, it's important to remember that greening your home doesn't require nearly this much time, money or effort. Not everyone can replace her roof -- not everyone wants to -- but everyone can take 60 seconds off her shower. And that's time saved, my friends.
