The New Product That Will Transform the Way You Apply Foundation

Play mad scientist with your foundation, thanks to Cover FX's latest foundation innovation

You can customize pretty much anything these days (hello, made-to-order Manolo Blahnik BBs), so why is it so tough to find a foundation that works for every aspect of your lifestyle? After all, the light coverage foundation you wear to the office probably isn't what you want when you hit the town on Saturday night. Once you consider the fact that your skin tone typically changes from summer to winter, and that some areas of your face need more coverage than others, you could end up with a bathroom stuffed full of products to keep up. That's where Cover FX Custom Cover Drops, $44, come in.

This product is like the LBD of your makeup bag. The drops are pure pigments that allow you to transform any water-based, oil-based or silicone-based product into a foundation, says Cover FX Global Brand Ambassador Derek Selby. With 24 shades and three undertones (pink, neutral and golden) to choose from, it's easy to find your perfect match. You can add the pigments to your favorite moisturizer or serum, or use them to tinker with the coverage and tone of your existing foundations and BB creams.

Because the pigments are created using the brand's special Flash Fusion Technology™, they don't mess with the consistency of the active ingredients in your skin care products, says Selby. This means you control the finish of the product. If you add them to an oil, you get a dewy finish; if you add it to an oil-free moisturizing cream, you get a matte finish; if you add it to a serum, you get a radiant finish.

In addition, you can customize the level of coverage you want. A general rule of thumb: Add one drop to your usual amount of product for sheer coverage. Two drops give medium coverage, three drops give full coverage and four drops give complete, no-imperfection-will-show-through coverage, says Selby.

This makes for a particularly seamless finish if you need to conceal redness or blemishes. Simply apply the lightest coverage you desire over your face, then put additional pigment into your base and use that in lieu of concealer. This ensures that the consistency and color of the foundation stay the same -- only the coverage changes, making for an undetectable cover-up, says Selby.

In the end, it's all about what works for you. That's the most exciting aspect of this product, according to Selby: "Today you might want one kind of finish, tomorrow night you want a different finish. You get to control it based on your lifestyle."
