Fall Wellness and Skin Tips

Refresh your skincare routine this fall with tips from Dr. Whitney Bowe and Lindsey Calla

Celebrity dermatologist and acne expert, Dr. Whitney Bowe and wellness expert Lindsey Calla, have teamed up to give you these helpful tips.

Dr. Whitney Bowe is committed to helping her patients achieve the best version of their skin. With years of expertise in the field of dermatology, she's here to help you get started:

"Clean up" your diet: Nutrition may influence acne for some people.1 Maintaining a diet of low glycemic index foods like non-starchy vegetables, steel-cut oatmeal and most fruits has been associated with improvements in acne.1, 2, 3 You may also want to avoid refined carbohydrates, like white bread or white rice.1

Get a good night's rest: One study showed that the risk of experiencing higher levels of stress may increase by 14 percent for every hour of sleep you lose.4,5 "Knowing that stress can trigger acne, there is no excuse not to get the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep a night," 4,6,7 says Dr. Bowe.

Talk to your dermatologist: It's important to visit your dermatologist to discuss treatment options and figure out what works best for you. "One medication I prescribe my acne patients 12 years or older is ACZONE® (dapsone) Gel 5%, the only acne treatment with active ingredient topical dapsone. ACZONE® treats inflammatory and noninflammatory acne,"8,9 says Dr. Bowe.

Wellness expert Lindsey Calla lives by these simple tips:

Sip on matcha: Matcha has a high concentration of antioxidants.10 Try it in a latte or add it to your morning green smoothie.

Stretch it out, take a breath: Engaging in a form of relaxation such as yoga, tai chi or meditation can greatly reduce stress, which may cause acne to flare in women.6,11 I also recommend taking five to ten minutes at the beginning or end of your day to focus on deep breathing in order to relax.11

Break a sweat: Regular exercise is important for overall well-being and can improve some skin conditions that are worsened by stress.12,13 Exercise may also help reduce stress by increasing the production of endorphins.12,13
