3 Gorgeous Ways to Wear Braids This Season

From a five-strand braid to the essential dutch braid, these are the three braids you need to master right now

Braids might be the one hairstyle that never goes out of season -- but it's an especially great look during those months when the weather's unpredictable (think: rain, sleet, wind and snow). "When you braid your hair you're in complete control of the outcome of what it's going to look like." says Emma Powers, ambassador for Beachwaver Co. and braid-master. To help us master this versatile look, Emma stopped by the Total Beauty studio to show us how to create -- and accessorize -- three, ultra-flattering, Instagram-worthy braids. You can watch the whole video above or check out a few highlights below.

Five-Strand Braid (0:00)
A five-strand braid might feel out of reach for those of us who have yet to master traditional braids -- but it's not as intimidating as you think. We're going to let you in on maybe biggest secret to behind those full, romantic braids you've been double tapping on Instagram: hair extensions.

Clip extensions onto the side of the hair you're braiding. Next, curl your hair all over (Emma recommends using the Beachwaver) and mist it with texture spray. Gather your hair over one shoulder. Section it into five even sections. Start repeat this mantra to yourself: Take the outside strand move it over the next strand and under the middle strand. Go to the other outside strand. Move it over the next strand and under the middle strand. Repeat. When you start running out of hair, you can do a three-strand braid. Tie it off with an elastic, and gently tug at your braid to make it appear fuller.

Headband Braid (10:10)
Heading to a party or wedding in the near future? Then this is your next 'do. All you need: clear elastics, some bobby pins and the ability to do a basic braid.

Prep your hair by curling it. Pulling from underneath your hair, take a section of hair, about two inches from the front of your head. Braid it. Secure it with an elastic and pancake it to make it appear fuller. Create an identical braid on the other side of your head. Pull one of the braids across your head (where a headband would fall) and secure it in place. Do the same with the other braid.

Dutch Braid (18:00)
The beauty of a dutch braid (also known as an inside-out braid and reverse French braid) is that it works on any length hair -- including, as we demonstrate, a shoulder-length lob.

Prep your hair by curling it. Section off a section at the front of your head about an inch-and-a-half wide. Clip the rest of your hair back. Divide the section into three strands. From here, you're going to go through the motions of French braiding, except you'll weave your strands of hair under instead of over, collecting hair from the front and back as you go. Start with the braid tight, and then you can pancake it too loosen it up at the end. Once you get to about where your eyebrow ends, you can do a basic three-strand braid. Tie off the braid with a clear elastic, and gently tug the braid to make it look fuller. Pin the braid behind your ear to finish the look.
