I recently moved away from home (where I had been since I was 9)and have begun showering and washing my face with a new water system (obviously!). It seems every time my face is introduced to a new water system it always flares up and breaks out with acne very badly! Why is this?? Does it have something to do with a different ph balance with the water?? Or does it have anything to do hard water versus soft water?? I really want to know! Does anybody have any answers for me??

Your skin has never been in contact with something in the water therefore it is reacting to it. It could be as simple as cooper verses plastic pipes or a reaction to a chemical. You could always do what my friend swears by and that is using distilled water to wash her face. Distilled water is free of minerals so if that is what is irritating your skin, it should help. It might take a few weeks to get your skin back to normal but it is a start.

I had a similar problem, not with my skin but with my hair...when I moved to london the water there destroyed my locks, as my hair was used to soft water not hard water. I know they make shampoo specifically for hard water, so maybe you could research online to see if they do the same with skin care??? Just a thought. Otherwise washing your face with distilled water excellent idea... could get tricky though when you are in the shower washing hair etc.

The same thing happened to me after moving from Australia to Florida... It was the "hard water". Florida sits on a giant aquifer and it is rich in limestone and other minerals, not great for hair, it also leaves calcium, and lime scale on taps etc...

I agree with other members that it's probably something in the water. Distilled water sounds like a good idea, for washing your face. As for the shower, I don't know if this is too much trouble, but maybe try installing one of those home water filters on the showerhead.

I have very hard water where I live, and I didn't know this is hard on hair as JBMummy says. I once vacationed in a place that had soft water, and it seemed I was NEVER going to wash that shampoo out! It was the weirdest thing I thought. Hopefully, your skin will adjust after a few weeks. Hard water makes housecleaning a pain, as I get mineral deposits on everything from the dishwasher to the tea kettle to the shower head! I go through gallons of vinegar a year, cleaning that buildup off! LOL Soft water definitley has some slick to it. What's worse is when you're conditioning your hair after shampooing, then everything feels downright oily! Oddly, for this reason and others, I prefer hard water. It doesn't feel so *wierd*.
