(I started this topic)

Hello everyone! I have a problem I really need some help with. My daughter is inter-racial (Daddy-Black, Mommy-White). Her hair is very fine and curly. When she gets up in the morning she looks like Don King (really!) She is only 18 months old. When I pull on a section of her hair, it comes down to her shoulders, but otherwise it is just below her ears. Is there any product out there that will lightly pull some of that curl out with out actually straighening it?

Please help!!!

Let me help you out.

My husband is Black and I'm Latina and we have a daughter too. Her hair is tightly curled and thick and I've been chemically relaxing her hair since she was a little over 2 years old. (I'm a former licensed hairdresser so I take great care of her hair and always have). I've never relaxed her hair so that it stayed straight when wet...I just processed her hair enough so that the curl would loosen enough so a blow out would last long but also so she could wear her hair curly when she wanted. She is now 17 and never wears her hair curly and I still relax her new growth.

Now in your case...please do not relax your daughter's hair. I'd never relax fine hair. What I'd suggest is for you to either put a couple braids in her hair at night and in the morning let them out and pull her hair into darling puffy ponytails or keep the braids in. Make sure you are combing out any tangles daily (using a large toothed comb) and keeping her hair moisturized...but not "greasing her scalp" or applying any heavy products to her hair. Just a tiny bit of a moisturizing product is fine. When she is old enough to sit through some hairstyling, then you could blow out her hair and either lightly flat iron it or let it set up on rollers.

Sounds like your daughter has a grade of hair that will be fairly easy for her to care for as she gets older...so keep the chemical relaxers away from her beautiful hair.
