I desperately need to get my mother in law out of a big time beauty rut. It's so bad, my kids notice it and make jokes about it. She constantly wears Robin egg blue eye shadow with fucia lip stick. This has not changed since I've known her (since 1984!). I'm trying to find a tactful way to broach the subject and to get her into a "chair" for a new look. I know she can be a real knock out if we could get her to change her very antiquated habit. She has beautiful skin and blue eyes with dark hair. I need all the suggestions I can get!

Does she have a birthday or special event coming up? and is there anyway you can disguise a visit to a makeup makeover session as a gift?

I don't think you can get her out of the rut unless she wants to get out of it herself! I know you have good intentions, but if she's happy with how she looks and feels, there isn't much you can do. :-(

They don't do it in front of her but her daughters do. One of them bought her new colors and I don't think she's ever worn them. I want to do it in a subtle manner and very positive.

I am thinking of two possibilities that may help and that would not embarrass her:

Your mother-in-law must be comfortable with how she looks. Unfortunately the people around her have more of a problem with her appearance than she does. You can't control the way other people think, but I would not let them verbalize it in front of myself or especially my children. I have taught my kid's to NEVER say unkind thing's about anyone, for any reason....

Just surprise her. tell her you would like to have a "girls day" with her, make it seem as though its completely innocent. paint nails first then work your way up to the face. tell her you want to do her make up just for fun, you know part of the girls day and try a more toned down modern version of her look. that way it will still be her just a better looking version!!!! and if you keep the same "theme" hopefully she will love it and continue to do it after the girls day. be sure to "accidentally' leave the make up you put on her at her house
