How do you get some one out of a rut?

I desperately need to get my mother in law out of a big time beauty rut. It's so bad, my kids notice it and make jokes about it. She constantly wears Robin egg blue eye shadow with fucia lip stick. This has not changed since I've known her (since 1984!). I'm trying to find a tactful way to broach the subject and to get her into a "chair" for a new look. I know she can be a real knock out if we could get her to change her very antiquated habit. She has beautiful skin and blue eyes with dark hair. I need all the suggestions I can get!

Does she have a birthday or special event coming up? and is there anyway you can disguise a visit to a makeup makeover session as a gift?

I don't think you can get her out of the rut unless she wants to get out of it herself! I know you have good intentions, but if she's happy with how she looks and feels, there isn't much you can do. :-(

BTW, I hope the kids don't ridicule her in her presence, or within earshot. :-( Ridicule is painful, for both kids and adults!

They don't do it in front of her but her daughters do. One of them bought her new colors and I don't think she's ever worn them. I want to do it in a subtle manner and very positive.

I am thinking of two possibilities that may help and that would not embarrass her:

1) If she has a birthday coming up, you could purchase a gift card w/ "makeover" at a cosmetic counter at a department store. Inform her it is for her to pamper herself. (Clinigue and Estee Lauder have pretty colors, and Clinique is a less expensive brand for a department store. Bonus if you schedule it at their "gift time" too. You may want to go with her and gently suggest colors to her. Just try to make it a positive experience for her.

2) If no birthday is coming up, just go to a mall with her, tell her you have been wanting to try new colors, or a new "fall " look. Stop by the counter and gently suggest she get made over as well- to get a new "fall " look. (this may work well, "robin egg blue" is NOT a fall color. This should work - well since fall is coming up. Tell her it can be "ya'lls time together to do something fun and girly.

Good luck!!! Hopefully she will discover a new look for herself- and it will be a positive experience!

In the same position you are. but i have givin him space and time to miss me and it didnt help.It just made him say "why all of a sudden is it a problem to you, it hasnt been before if you say its been like this for a while now". If you want more out of him, you need to put more out there of you. Take a little extra time in the day when you see him to make it aparant that you look different, more makeup less make up something new with your hair new clothes anything. Make him notice you. If you give him more things to get excited about the more he is going to look forward to you and maybe that will spark up the relationship. My older sister told me to do this and so im going to try it. Oh and by the way, me and my boyfriend had this fight a few hours ago. So im starting my trial run on what my sister told me tomorow first thing.
