Products with 2% salicylic acid will probably help. A great drugstore brand is Neutrogena - their acne wash is a great basic product. They also have a toner, and don't forget a moisturizer with a touch of salicylic acid as well.

Stay away from drugstore and "info-mercial" products - they DON'T work, and most of them contain an ingredient that is the same as anti-freeze. Do not be fooled by professional brands that require a toner, because that means that their skin wash is not pH-balanced for the skin and is going to make matters worse. As a professional skin therapist/aesthetician and physician assistant, I recommend finding a GlyMed professional in your area and have your daughter's skin assessed by a professional who can recommend the RIGHT products to help her. (Go to "GlyMed.com" and put in your zip code/city for a salon or spa that carries their products). Make sure you get her skin evaluated, as GlyMed's line is very extensive and have multiple products for acneic skin. Can't tell you how many teen and adult faces I have "saved".... including my own two teenagers (their pediatrician suggested a dermatologist who wanted to put them on Accutane - no THANKS!) who use their GlyMed faithfully! Good luck!

Thanks for your responses. There's a Glymed about 45 minutes away from us. We'll give that a try.

My son went through the same thing and I had a facial specialist tell me to have him start taking L-lysine daily. She also recommend us to buy some products from Dermastart, they have a Clear Choice acne line that worked really well. So far so good .... Good Luck

I would check out www.acne.org--seriously. I am on birth control pills and was put on a type that helps skin, so that was a great start for me. but I still was having break-outs. Then I read the info at the website acne.org and realize what I was doing wrong.

First of all, I wasn't washing my face long enough. I switched to a gentle cleanser and started washing my face twice a day for 2 minutes at a time. I read that women don't wash their face long enough--and I don't mean rub til you're raw--I just mean basic cleansing. Most women don't wash long enough and leave behind grime they can't see.

Secondly, I'd been using Benzoyl peroxide but just tubes with 10% power, which is irritating and too strong for most people's skin! I also did not apply it consistently. and I didn't apply enough. I switched to a brand (made by Neutrogena--the only one with a low % of BP) that was at 2.5%. I applied it to my entire face twice a day after washing my face gently. I allowed the BP to dry for 5-10 minutes before applying lotion (a must) with SPF and that was non-clogging. My face did dry out some as my skin got used to the BP and after a few weeks I really started noticing a difference in the break-outs.

Like I said previously, I used a good lotion after applying the Benzoyl peroxide. I don't have an expensive lotion, just an Equate Face Lotion with SPF 15 in it. I used it daily when I washed and applied BP in the mornings.

It worked for me. I had to follow it carefully and consistently for a month or so and I really did notice a difference!!

I too struggled with acne all throughout high school and college. What works best is Benzoyl Peroxide. She should either wash her face at night with a benzoyl Peroxide soap like Panoxyle or apply a topical BP product like Oxy after washing with a mild cleanser. At first it may dry her face out but within a week or two her skin will get used to it and normalize. She should be careful not to wash her face to often with it (at night is sufficient). She should only use the BP products at night and in the morning wash with a scrub. I like St. Ives or an even better one is by Garnier. With this regimen her face should be clearer soon. Also let her know that we girls with oily skin do NOT need a moisturizer and she should stay away from using too many oily or heavy products. When she does break out the best remedy is to apply ice to the area(s) for about 15 minutes to reduce redness and apply a small amount of Benzoyl peroxide then leave it alone as much as possible! I find that a little concealer and pressed powder applied lightly with a q-tip does wonders. Hope this helps.

I'm 18 and going through the same thing! I usually only break out in my t-zone, mostly the forehead and I'm on the same hunt. I go to acne.org regularly. Can you let me know if your daughter has made progress and what you guys have chosen to do?

I know how hard having acne can be and what it can do to someone self-esteem.

In my early 20s I had cystic acne on my jaw line that would not go away. I used proactive and this really did help, however I did find it drying at times and rather expensive. A cheaper alternative, as I still get these
from time to time the Clean and Clear advantage system really does work as well. It’s much less expensive than the proactive and does just a good of a job if not better for half the price.

I am currently suffering from an extended bout of adult acne! I am in my 30's and did not have a problem as a teenager, only as an adult.
Over the years I have moved around from the US to the UK and that is where my acne issues began, there were a few contributing factors that I discovered: a) the water supply! if the supply is recycled for the town/city then its safe to say that it is 'dirty'. b) cleansing with the right cleanser ( dermalogica has a fantastic line just for acne and IT WORKS! c) respiratory issues can also acerbate the acne also.

The BEST TREATMENT EVER SO FAR: is with an incredible man called Eduardo, in Miami Beach, he offers a Laser treatment which tackles the cause of acne at the source.

Please if you can check out "WHITE LIGHT SKIN CARE" the website is: whitelightskincare.com. It is not 'cheap' it is an investment in self confidence and personal well being.

Eduardo is incredible and I am truly grateful for him and the techniques to cleanse and treat that he has taught me.
