Tinted moisturizer -- before or after primer??

So, I’ve read (and even printed out) the “How To” here on what order to apply products to my face (http://www.totalbeauty.com/content/package/c_order_of_things), it’s a really great article for us relative newbies! I’m very comfortable with the moisturizer --> primer --> foundation steps, however, tinted moisturizers (which I like sometimes) seem to throw a wrench into this orderly process. I know that moisturizers should go on before primers, but the fact that they have a tint (which makes me think of them as also “foundation-like”) throws me off. I’m afraid if I put a primer on before tinted moisturizer, the moisturizer won’t be able to sink into my skin, and I’m afraid that if I apply the primer afterwards it could mess up the tint! What’s a girl to do?

Hey!!

So I just started using tinted mositurizer - really only because it's summer, i want the minimal coverage and i wanted to see what all the hype was about. This may sound crazy... but I don't use primer with the tinted mositurizer. I was tempted to try it, but I have the same concerns as you. i do use a concealer stick before i put the tinted moisturizer on... but i kind of treat the moisturizer as a foundation, not necessarily a moisturizer. I like Jane's nearly foundation tinted moisturizer, i think it works wonderfully without a primer!!!

I agree that you might not need a primer; tinted moisturizer is great for summer weather because it combines two products into one, taking weight off your skin. Primer would add to that, and maybe eliminatinga product that lets your skin breathe so little would be better for the summer. Just a thought. :)

Other than that, though, I wonder if tinted moisturizer is meant to be used with primer at all. Hmmm.

Thanks beautygirl and JennBee for your advice! Beautygirl: I don't think skipping the primer when using tinted moisturizer sounds at all crazy, and it sounds like that may be the best choice. I'll miss the mattifying of my primer, but I should be able to reduce the shine factor with some powder.

I don't use foundation at all-I only use a tinted moisturizer. And I don't use a primer. I use an oil-free toner which is really mild before I put on any of my make-up and that's it. It works great-I've had that routine and the same moisturizer (it's by Neutrogena) for 6 years and I'm sticking with it. And it's the best in hot weather-I'm from Florida where it's hot and humid nearly all year long and moved to New Mexico where it's hot an dry, and I never feel like my make-up is running off. A little bit of loose powder will set the moisturizer and cut down on the shine for sure.

I would recommend using just a tinted moisturizer by itself. When you use that, you really don't need a primer to be honest. If you feel that you need a primer, apply it before you apply the tinted moisturizer. If you use moisturizer, of course apply that before you apply primer, followed by foundation.
