(I started this topic)

My mom and I share a hated trait...the awful, dreaded dry skin all over your body trait. I hate it and I have tried everything, including switching my diet and drinking more water. It's gotten so bad the back of my arms feel like there is small bumbs and they are always dry, but I am beginning to wonder if it's a skin condition, my mom is already getting cancer sores on her skin, and I have found some on me too, but i'm 25, we both have freckles and constantly stay out of the sun.

What kind of lotions, therapies, or remedies have you found for sensitive, dry flaking skin? Should I think about seeing a dermatologist?

I would most definitely go to the dermatologist. That sounds like it could be something serious. Not meaning to scare you, but better to be safe than sorry. Plus, with the dermatologist, you can get a solution right away and not have to guess at a cure on your own. good luck!

Try Cetaphil. My mom had really really dry skin (so much so we called the doc) and they suggested this product. After a few days even granny's alligator skin was resolved.

You can get it at most drug stores and Walmart as well.

Good Luck!

I think the dermatologist sounds like an excellent idea if you are worried about skin cancer!
Aside from that, here are a few things that help with my severely dry skin. I don't use bar soap, which leaves a film on the skin and can overly dry your skin out. Instead, I use an Aveeno creamy body wash, which doesn't dehydrate my skin. You should apply your body cream within three minutes of leaving the shower, to prevent the dehydration that occurs from water evaporating from the skin. Cetaphil cream is a good one, though my favorite is Fruits & Passion monoi body butter, which I purchase from ebubbles.com. It's a bit pricey, but it really locks in the moisture and smells great. For the bumps on the backs of your arms, try AmLactin cream, which can also be used over the whole body to eliminate flakiness. It contains lactic acid to slough off that flaky layer gently. Those bumps are probably keratosis pilaris--basically just clogged hair follicles--which about half of the population has to some degree.

I have insanely dry skin too.. but I use Eucerin which works REALLY well... I went to a dermatologist and this was one of his suggestions.. they have allll kinds... so you can probably find whatever you're looking for!!

Agree with beautygirl86....Eucerin has a great line of products for dry skin. I used to have very dry, patchy skin on my face that would flake and feel like sandpaper. I did go to my primary doctor and she said to try very rich, thick moisturizers in those areas. Also, she said not to wash the face more than once a day, so I started skipping morning washes. (This was hard since it was a childhood habit) I initally tried Eucerin Original Moisturizing Cream. Worked in only days. The doctor diagnosed it as a form of eczema, but she didn't think I needed to see a dermatologist because the problem appeared more cosmetic than medical to her.

Try Curel. It's not as greasy as Eucerin and keeps your skin hydrated all day. I won't use anything else!

hey, if your worried about getting the cancer thing, then you should definatley go to the dermatologist. I have dry skin too. Try buying rubbing alcohol.Apply on a wash cloth...this way the roughness of the cloth can help scrape away the dry skin. And apply to your skin. After you finished doing this, apply vaseline's Moisture Locking Lotion. Do this everyday and you should see moist hydrated skin in no time. Hope this helped.

Another thing to do - change your detergent to a dye-free and fragrance free kind. We got one at Costco and it works well except if you have major stains to get out and then only TIDE and shout does the trick.
