It's so hard to recommend products for other people because I don't know what works for your skin. I can tell you that I keep my acne-prone skin clear by using products that have at least 2% salicylic acid in it. Anything less, and I don't find it to be very effective.

Do you use a three step program? Have you tried systems like Proactiv? I've heard mixed results, but the people who have liked it really swear by it. There are also some new acne kits in the drugstores that look quite promising.

Good luck! It's tough keeping problem skin under control.

I swear by Proactiv. I barely ever had a zit until I was 22, then I started breaking out bad. Within two weeks of Proactiv, my skin almost completely cleared and I have no scarring. If you haven't already tried it, you might want to.

Also, you might want to see an allergist. A friend of mine was breaking out bad and couldn't figure out why, and it turns out she had had a gluten allergy for years and that's what was triggering the breakouts.

Good luck!

for me the DDF line always works. specially if your breakouts hurt. they have this excellent mask called sulfur therapeutic mask. i use it as spot treatment too. chemical peels also do an excellent job on evening out my skin from the dark spot acne leaves. i truelly recomend getting some chemical peels. 3 steps systems are great but you really have to try a few untill you find something that works for you. its a pain! you can never go wrong with some chemical peels and spot treatments.

Thanks aly. I have been thinking about trying a peel lately. The last time I tried to get one I had to many skin disasters going on at the time and was advised not to get one just yet so hopefully I can get one now.

Hi there,

I too suffer from acne, but it wasn't until recently that I discoverd acne can be caused by food allergies and gluten can be one of the main triggers. With that being said, it might be worth a try to look up gluten and acne. By avoding such food that has gluten I have much success with cleaning up most of my acne. One last thing, my doctor presrcibed clinoxyle glen ( not sure if I spelled that correctly) but it has helped a lot! Worth a try

Well first of all, I would recommend going to see a doctor. You can spend all of the money you want on products, but you must go see a dr. I use to have the same thing; horrible cystic acne. I met my husband with these nasty things on my face and he still loved me! :)
(I know that's besides the point), but in a nutshell here's what I did.
I went to a laser center to remove all of the scarring. Of course, they don't want the scars to come back and if you break out they still will; so my whole skin regimen completely changed.
I am like a year post lasers and can finally use some regular products.
Supplements and changing my eating habits has also helped me drastically. I take fish oil and flax oil supplement and I swear; I don't break out with it.
I also take birth control; and I know that's helped me out alot.
I live in CA and I highly recommend the laser and dermatology center. Dr. Jacob Rispler is the dr. and he really knows what he is doing.
Sometimes, I would get these really horrible huge crators and I'd go in and he would inject like neon fluid into the lesion. Overnight, it was gone w/o any scarring. it's not cheap though. It was like fifty bucks for each injection.
I'm so glad that's over and I know I was very fortunate enough to have all that done.
But if you can; do it.
Most places take credit too.

My 18 year old brother had cystic acne and tried almost every acne product available and even used proactive which just made it dry and flakey but did not help much. He gave up all chocolate and pop products and steamed his face at night before bed with hot wash clothes. That actually started to help, but the product that made his acne all but disappear was the Erythromycin Topical Solution that our Dr. prescribed. You should ask your Dr. if this could help you and see what he/she says. My brother has used this for almost a year now and although he does get a pimple here and there, it is not that horrible cystic acne that just looked painful.
