I need some hair help here! I'm in school for Esthetics so my friends often come to me when they have skin care questions, but I know next to nothing about hair.

Recently I was asked how to get rid of dandruff. My friend said she tried Head & Shoulders, Neutrogena TGel and Selsun Blue but nothing made a difference. Any ideas? I have no clue what to tell her.

I know this is going to sound weird and it doesn't smell very good, but if she puts apple cider vinegar on her scalp for about 10 minutes or as long as she can stand (the smell makes it difficult) after shampooing, by the end of one or 2 weeks it should be gone. This is because dandruff is caused by a fungus which is killed by the vinegar. If it comes back, just treat again with the vinegar. Most dandruff shampoos only exfoliate the scalp and sooth the itchiness - they have no real monetary interest in curing dandruff, just controlling it.

Awesome, thank you. Does she need to rinse out the vinegar or leave it?

Leave the vinegar in. It helps shine too. :)

Also, has she tried the T-Sal formulation by Neutrogena? It is 3% salicylic acid instead of the pyrethezone zinc (or whatever the usual ingredient is) and seems to work for some people.

I've had issues with my scalp before but beware. I thought it was dandruff and it wasn't. (Because I tried every dandruff product, organic products, even the cider trick to no avail. I needed a mousse-like rx from my dermatologist to get it cleared up. Within a couple days it was gone!

Hmmmm...when I did that all I could smell was vinegar until I washed it out! How did you get around the smell?

A dry scalp could also be caused by the shampoo the person was previously using. I know a lot of shampoos contain high level of sulfates that can cause dandruff/dry scalp. I've used T-gel and had good results with that.

My hairdresser told me to brush my hair (especially close to the scalp) to exfoliate it before i shower and every few days I use Bumble and Bumble Tonic shampoo and I use their CoCo conditioner in between shampoos (I don't shampoo everyday, just use the conditioner)
