Seriously, I love having painted nails, but I get so exasperated with the fact that it begins to chip within 24 hours of polishing. Anyone have any advice? I really don't want to polish every day, and I can't deal with chips.

Retrodiva, are you using a base coat or top coat? In my experience, I can use just about any brand of polish as long as I have a good base and top to protect it.

I swipe my clean, unpolished, cuticle-removed, clipped and filed nails with rubbing alcohol, I do not use a base coat. I apply 2 coats of polish, then Seche Vite fast dry top coat.

I think it does depend a lot of your individual nails. I used to think I had a problem with chipping because of the products I was using, but it was actually because my nails were so soft. At first the polish would crack around the tips, and then chip off.

Use a decent top and base coat. Sally Hansen's is good. And make sure your varnish itself is decent as well - I went for a manicure the other day and they used Nails Inc varnish on my nails. 2 days gone and not a SINGLE chip so far.

Thanks, everyone! I've been using Zoya's Anchor base coat, but I don't think it dries very sticky at all. My nails have a tendency to peel as well, so I'm wondering if it's not an actual nail problem, versus a product problem. Most of my products are either OPI, Zoya, or China Glaze, with an occasional L'Oreal thrown in. I will pick up the CND and/or Orly basecoats as well - whichever I find first.

I also read something about the type of file used on the nails. Would a file cause nails to peel? Not necessarily the file but the way you file could cause a jagged edge. And if the edge isn't sealed properly you will have lifting. I use a glass file or a high grit traditional file (the pink ones that are 300+). A lot of people swear by glass files because they give you a smoother edge. I buy mine online for cheap at www.aboutglassnailfiles.com but Sally Hansen's La Cross line makes one as does Sephora and Essie. I suggest holding the file at a 45 degree decline angle so the file is hitting the undersdie of your nail. It will help you avoid those weird hanger on type pieces when you file. And make sure you file in one direction. Going back and forth is easier but it causes jagged edges. One last idea. Swipe the polish, base and top coats along the edge and slightly underneath your nail before painting the top. It's almost like edging a wall when you paint. It makes sure that everything is covered and properly sealed. I hope that helps! :D

It helps more than you know. I can say that my mani that I did using some of these tricks lasted almost four days - that's a miracle! Next I'm getting a new file to see if that doesn't help.

Since you sound like you are already using ZOYA products, we recommend that you use our entire system for best results. Using a mix and match approach can sometiems lead to undesireable results.

Just a quick update: the crystal nail file is KEY! I'm amazed at how well it works and I'm happy to say that, in conjunction with my Orly base coat, I have managed to have a decent manicure for 5 days! Woohoo! It's a record! Many thanks!
