When to part with old make-up

I may be a bit lazy or too attached, but I have been holding on to some of my eye shadows for years or until they are used-up. While I am always upgrading my mascara and eye liners, I am not as committed to throwing out lip sticks or nail polish. My makeup bags are also overflowing because I am constantly buying new products and trying new looks. Should I be throwing out my old make-up after a couple of months? Am I alone in my addiction?
