High End Vs Drugstore?

(I started this topic)

So I got my hair trimmed today by a stylist whom Ive never been to before (my regular guy is so hard to get in to!). She was ranting on and on about how low end products, like Dove (which I LOVE), and Pantene Pro-V use beeswax and petroleum jelly in their products, which end up ruining your hair because it coats them and makes it impossible for products to actually penetrate your hair..? I thought it was all kind of BS but I didn't wanna be rude. I've always felt that drugstore products were SOMETIMES comparable to high end products. I think Dove shampoo and conditioner works better than Redken, personally, and it's cheaper. However, I do prefer Redken and Bumble and Bumble styling products to ANY drugstore stuff. Do you think my hair stylist was telling the truth? Or was she simply trying to get a commission and trying to get me to buy more expensive products?

I'm always a little suspicious of stylists who are trying to sell me something, too (says the girl who walked out of the salon with the entire Paul Mitchell Smoothing line last time). It's my understanding that you can get excellent results out of drugstore products - I've read that Pantene's formulas are very similar to what you find in high-end products. I personally used Neutrogena's Triple Moisture when my hair was dried out and loved it. I don't think that beeswax or petroleum products are necessarily bad for your hair - I think it's more of an individual thing. If you can find a product in a drugstore that works for you, I say go for it! Everyone's hair is so different, and you just have to experiment and find which one works the best.

There was a brand a long time ago that put wax in their product. It was one of the really cheap brands, either like Prell or pert plus or something like that. However, I use drugstore stuff and my stylist always raves about how healthy my hair is.

You know the commercials for suave that says one woman used suave and the other woman used paul mitchell? My mom uses suave shampoo and conditioner. Her stylist commented on how healthy her hair was and asked her what shampoo she used. She was too embarassed to tell him that she used suave and said, "Oh just whatever we've got laying around."

The best thing for your hair, is whatever is best for your hair.

Truth is, I am pretty aniti-drugstore for anything. I just find high end products work better.

I have dry, fine, chemically treated hair. There is not a drugstore brand on earth that contains enough emollients and keratin to undo the damage I do to my hair =), so I am all about high end.

But if you don't use a lot of heat styling or chemical treatments, it probably doesn't matter too much.

Well said. I am also suspicious of hairstylists who bad mouth one product and try to sell you another product. I personally don't care for D/S products but that is a personal decision.

As a hair dresser I would have to say High End is always better. We did experiments with different drugstore brands in school who had such high acid content that you could perm someone's hair with it! I don't know about you but that doesn't sit well with me. The same with drugstore color...the ammonia content is so high in those so they will work on "everyones" hair that it is very damaging!

Interesting perspectives here. I haven't tried much high-end hair stuff myself (Paul Mitchel was overly simple and did not impress me), but I do believe there are some good products to be found in drugstores for your hair - IE the Neutrogena Triple Moisture and some John Frieda. If you aren't a snob about it and keep an open mind, you can find good things on a much smaller budget than, say, for Fekkai and the like. :)

I've heard Pantene is the worst for your hair, though, from multiple hair dressers - so I would never use it again.

What do you mean Paul Mitchell was "overly simple"?

For the most part I have to agree with your stylist here. Some Shampoos and Conditioners can have harmful substances like that in them. however with some proper research I"m sure you can find plenty of good drugstore items. It really depends on the specific shampoo and conditioner.

Drugstore products are high end products. Dove products should work well i have been using them from 4 months. Use these products to get your hair healthy and shiny.
