I've seen/heard so many negative things about nail spas, especially the foot baths. In all honesty, the part I enjoy most is the foot bath, however after going to my local nail salon, it always looks as if I have dirt under my nails, only it doesn't come off. I thought it may be a slight fungus. I want to try another place but I'm worried that the majority of them just aren't that sanitary.

I would definitely pay close attention to how they clean their work stations while I'm waiting for my mani and pedi.

Thanks, Nillacookie, I also think giving up nail salons would be eliminating a source of joy in my life. I'm sure the places I go to aren't that bad. I mean, if they were, I'd think they'd be a bit less busy or there'd be bad reviews on citysearch or yelp.

It is such a treat to get a mani and a pedi, but like you, I have concerns about the foot baths. Do you take your own tools?

I don't take my own tools but I definitely look for places that either sterilize everything after each and every customer or who use different tools for everyone. A lot of the spas in NYC are definitely starting to use separate tools, which I think is a big plus! Also, definitely make sure the foot baths are clean. If it looks grungy or dirty, DON'T put your feet in there!!

A local friend didn't actually contact MRSA from a pedi, but she ended up at her doctor's for a bacterial infection on her feet and legs after a pedi. She had shaved her legs prior to having it done.

I think as long as you pay close attention to the staff and how they act before and during your treatment you should get a pretty good idea of whether or not to go back, and if you're unhappy with the environment then say so. There's no need to give up altogether - just exercise caution.

I don't bring in my own tools either, but like others, I just for mannerisms of the employees while I'm there. That usually determines how clean the place is. I'd also pay a little bit more for a place I know is really nice and clean :)

I have never brought my own tools even though I keep hearing about it. I always think the place must be clean bc it looks clean but I just don't know. Honestly, where I go, it's soooo busy that I don't see them having time to clean the foot baths. in fact, I know that I've stepped into one right after someone else's feet were in there ( which just sort of grossed me out writing that) As for tools, they always have them with them so I haven't ever seen them come out of an autoclave. I still enjoy the mani/pedis though

I don't do it yet myself, but brining your own tools is probably your best line of defense. One thing I do now is I skip the foot bath with the jets and just have them use a regular basin filled with warm water. It's not as relaxing as the jets, but my salon has great massage chairs for when you use the basin so it's not so bad. I hear that it's the jets that are filled with germs...b/c bacteria gets caught in them and they're hard to clean well unless scrubbed and scrubbed...and I have yet to see those baths really scrubbed in between uses!
