Wow, this thread is making me think twice about getting pedicures. Where I go I've seen them clean the foot baths between uses, but I don't see them really scrub.

(I started this topic)

I've also heard that it's all in the jets and near impossible to clean them properly between every customer. I may just have to skip the jetted foot baths, which is a shame bc they're my favourite part. I was looking at the totalbeauty feature on nail problems and the nail fungus photos made me wince. Don't want to ever deal with one.

I ended up in the emergency room about five years ago with a blood infection from a dental procedure. It was the water from the pump. Very similar to the foot baths.

But that being said, my tootsies are suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder. My little piggies have not seen the light of day since October and are in dire need of a pedicure. But with all the concerns about MRSA -- Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus -- my brain says, "Do your own pedicure, Queenie!" But The Pigs want to be pampered.

I will buy new tools today. Mine are looking a littled wicked. Some salons keep individual tools on-site for specific customers.

I don't know the science behind this but some girls plop a Pure Zeal tablet to the water basin. It allegedly kills the bacteria. It contains four oils that have antibacterial and antifungal properties: Thyme Composition, Siberian Pine Needle Oil, Sage Composition , and Tea Tree Oil.

If anybody has used this, please let me know what you think about it.

I am going to visit this salon tomorrow night. It's called Dashing Diva...they have locations in NY & LA.

They have some good info posted on their website about hygine and sanitation and what they do. Naturally a mani/pedi costs more there but to me its worth it.

Here's what it says on their website about foot baths:

The Center for Disease Control in Atlanta issued guidelines against whirlpool foot baths in 2001 because they are a breeding ground for fortuitum (a microbacterium that causes boils on the legs). If the filters are not cleaned after each service, serious skin infections can develop.

they have other sanitation info on their site:

I've also been to a few places that actually keep a box with your name on it with your tools. Of course they need a huge storage area, but it looks kind of cool and I know no one else has touched my stuff!

really, the best thing is to stay away from the spa foot baths. If they bring you a dish pan you're much better off.
