Okay, I have conducted an exhaustive search on serums. I want something that smooths, brightens and refines.

Here are my choices so far:

1. Olay Regenerist Rejuvinating Serum
2. Boots #7 Age Rewind Intensive Serum
3. Philosophy When Hope is not Enough Serum
4. Serious Skin Care RuLinea FX Serum

Are any of these good? Are pricier brands better than Olay, Boots, etc? Do I need retinol, vitamin C, what?

I use Olay's Regenerist products...the Daily Rejuvenating Serum both morning and night and I use the Daily Thermal Mini Peel to cleanse. I'm in my late 30s and have recently been mistaken for a college student...so somthing must be working. lol

I had gone on olayforyou.com and did the skin analysis and they recommended the regenerist line. I'm 34 and I don't need to turn back time..yet:) But I love that rush of still being carded for alcohol. They should put THAT on the packaging!ha Thank You.

I am also in my thirties and I own an e-boutique that sells only organic all natural skin care and one of the BEST products I have ever used is Luzern's V12 Serum. I have worked for both Chanel and Dior and have been exposed to MANY products and this stuff is amazing. It is a high dose of Vitamin C (among other things) that helps with existing lines and wrinkles and helps combat environmental stress as well. Everyone (and I mean everyone) I know who has tried this serum RAVES about it.
And it is devoid of any questionable ingredients that are probably doing you more harm than good.

As a woman in my 30's I share the same concerns! I'm a big fan of Vit. C, but it's a potential irritant for anyone with even remotely sensitive skin. I consider my skin to be pretty tough, but C gives me tons of blackheads! I've switched to other potent anti-oxidants like Vit. E and Argan Oil and my skin has been so much happier. Hyaluronic Acid like in the When Hope Is Not Enough capsules is an awesome choice too. Keep your skin hydrated and happy, always wear sunscreen and protect with anti-oxidants. That's a good formula to start out with I think. I do hear good things about Regenerist, although I have not personally tried it.

I have actually tried When Hope is Not Enough serum with the vitamin C powder that you mix in with it and it totally clogged my pores. I wonder after reading your post if it was the vit C??

I totally think it's the C! I've even tried less potent sources of c and found the same issue.

I'm a huge fan of the new L'Oreal Skin Genesis line. I have breakout-prone skin, and it hasn't caused me any issues with clogged pores at all.
