    Burt's Bees Hand Salve

Cancel your plans for the next hour...

Cancel your plans for the next hour or two if you plan to use this product. It coats your hands in a layer of oil (almond and olive oils are the first two ingredients) that does not absorb for a long time no matter how dry your skin is. I got it as a gift more than 8 years ago and the tin is still 3/4 full. Meanwhile, I have gone through maybe five tubes of Neutrogena's Norwegian Formula Hand Cream.

  • Dr. Hauschka Volume Mascara

I would like to like this product, but at $25 or more a pop, it's just not worth the trouble. As many remarked, it smudges easily. It is not a "volume" mascara--it looks about as voluminous as a single coat of Maybelline's Great Lash. The biggest problem for me is that it is difficult to remove with water, and even with water+soap. I have gotten accustomed to washing off non-waterproof mascara with just water. It works with Lancome Hypnose Instant Drama, which, by the way, is a far superior volumizing mascara in the same price range. The Dr. Hauschka stuff just runs all over your upper and lower eyelid, giving you that Captain Sparrow look.

  • Lancome Juicy Tubes Jelly Ultra Shiny Lip Gloss

It isn't too sticky, and it lasts a while. Certainly longer than Sephora's tube lip gloss. I wasn't crazy about the color I got, but it is a solid product. Nice flavor, too!

  • Lancome Hypnose Drama Instant Full Body Volume Mascara

I've loved Lancome since I was a teenager. It is reliably good quality, and it delivers on all of its promises. It does thicken lashes, and they look longer, too. It wears well and lasts a while. Well worth the money.

  • L'Oreal Paris Colour Juice Sheer Juicy Lip Gloss

I love the fragrance they put into this lip gloss. It is moisturizing, provides decent coverage, and it lasts longer than Sephora's product.

  • Neutrogena SkinClearing Oil-Free Concealer

Nothing but cons here. - Applicator wastes product--very difficult to control the amount, it all just comes out in one big blob. Worst of all, at the end, about 1/4 of the tube cannot be used because the plunger cannot enter the narrow tip of the tube! - Too sheer. It doesn't cover well, and requires several applications - Looks shiny and oily, and takes forever to dry I can't testify to its "skin clearing" power because I get so frustrated with it that I don't use it more than once per zit. I much prefer Aveda's concealer, which covers well, has a sensible package, and is matte.

  • Abreva
    6.0

    Abreva

    It has very limited effects

I've been suffering cold sores all my life, so I know the early signs and my triggers (PMS, sun and dry or cold weather are the worst). Abreva helps only at the very early stages of the cold sore's development. I have learned that when my lips get so dry and chapped that the edges get red, Abreva will prevent a cold sore from developing. On the other hand, once a cold sore is definitely on its way, Abreva doesn't do much to cut healing time. If anything, it seems to prolong it. I have learned not to bother with Abreva once I have developed a red spot--I just wait for the blisters to develop, pop them with a clean needle, dry the area with an astringent, and keep the lips moisturized to prevent a crust from forming. So, Abreva is useful to keep around for those near misses, but not for actual outbreaks.

  • St. Ives Fresh Skin Apricot Scrub

St. Ives Fresh Skin Apricot Scrub

    The best scrub out there!

This scrub is simply awesome. It has just the right amount of ground up apricot stone to exfoliate, rinses clean, and is the best value for the money. Right after I use it, my skin is rosy, and with continued use, it seems to keep excess oil in check. I wish every drug store carried it!

  • Burt's Bees Peach & Willowbark Deep Pore Scrub

It looks like a scrub and it feels like a scrub when you first put it on, but then when you rinse it, it leaves a thick, greasy layer on your skin. It feels as though you've been rubbing your face with Crisco. I should have looked closer--the first three ingredients are water, grape seed oil, and stearic acid. Stearic acid is basically wax. I will not be buying this again, and I am not even sure I will finish the $8 tube.

  • Aveda Tourmaline Charged Eye Creme
    2.0

    Aveda Tourmaline Charged Eye Creme

Almost made my eyes fall out of their sockets

This is the product that made me give up on Aveda. About the second or third time I used it, it made my eyelids swell and turn red--I couldn't go anywhere for a day! Aveda claims that this product "reduces puffiness"--make that "induces puffiness." Just because it's natural does not mean it is safe--poison ivy is 100% natural, too!
