  • Revlon PhotoReady 3D Volume Mascara

I do give props to Revlon for coming up with a brush completely covered in lash-coating bristles. Nevertheless, that rounded tip ends up getting loaded with excess mascara, and when I wipe it off it all accumulated into this goop where you twist off the cap. The 3D claim is a gimmick; my lashes, if anything were less noticeable, even in blackest black. My lashes look a little fatter with application, but not by much. Good for a more natural volume, but I'm more of bold, look-at-me lashes.

  • L'Oreal Paris Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base
    10.0

L'Oreal Paris Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base

Wonderful for combo-oily skin, packaging could do better

While I was afraid that the thicker consistency of the primer would gunk up my pores and feel heavy, the exact opposite effect occurred. I never felt that my skin was being weighed down by the primer, and the thicker texture, in my opinion, is what helped to control the oil on my face. It didn't really shrink the size of my pores, but, honestly, what actually can? I didn't need a primer that tried to make my skin glow, just something to control the oil, help the makeup last, and to even out my skin tone while not making it look washed out. And this primer pulled through 100%! The only warning I'd give is that this product is in a jar. A little goes a long way, so don't just shove your finger into the jar. For me I felt that I ran out rather quickly--I was dedicated--so the price seems a little steep. In my opinion, it's so worth it.

  • Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Inspired by Carmindy Luminizing Face Primer

As far as making my foundation last, helping to hide imperfections, and feeling barely there, this primer is a winner. On the flip side, there is waaay too much sparkle in this little baby. Even when I tried using the primer sparingly, when I saw my reflection in the mirror I could very easily see the "smoke and mirrors" behind making my face glow. So, unfortunately, it looked more glittery than shimmery. I also didn't really notice the amount of shine on my face go down with use of this product. I think Carmindy is a wonderful and wise makeup artist, but it's like the undercover agent primer is fighting for the spotlight with my foundation and not in a good way.

  • CoverGirl LashBlast 24 Hour Mascara

I chose this mascara because, well, it was in the "new" section of Walgreen's cosmetics and one of the colors is a dark blue. I liked how I got color and some volume, and it being a more enduring formula my curl was held with no flakes or smudges. Thing is, I like the big, bold lashes, so these just didn't quite cut it. The odor also was like dirt or like an old tire, right from the start. And when I tried removing it using a waterproof eye makeup remover (L'Oreal), nothing happened! Barely any mascara came off! Even by the next day, I could still feel bits of mascara still clinging to my lashes! This mascara may be a bit too die-hard when it comes to fulfilling the 24-hour hold, and I will not be repurchasing this product any time soon.

  • Maybelline New York Dream Liquid Mousse

The perks for when I tried this out what was it really did give me an airbrushed look to my skin, hiding pimples and uneven tone. What made this dream head in reverse was that while I was using the Medium 2, the lightest shade (Medium 1 only appeared as concealer where I live), did not match with the rest of my skin. I couldn't go lighter without looking like a ghost, and on closer observation I saw that the foundation was also turning me orange. And it's not just me, since I've seen it on some of my friends new to the cosmetics scene with the same discoloration problem and who are using shades in the Light spectrum.

  • Maybelline New York Fit Me! Foundation

Trying to choose a shade that best fit my olive complexion, I hurriedly chose 235 since it best fit the shade of my neck underneath the unforgiving white fluorescent lights at Target. Pretty much what Thorne said about this foundation is what happened to me: barely any coverage even after multiple layers were applied. But I guess what's really making me resist trying FitMe! again in another shade is that I did an experiment where I applied 235 to one half of my face and another foundation to the other half, and then asked my mom if she could tell a difference between the two. She pointed to the side that had 235 and said that it made me look flat and grayish. Last time I checked, no living human should look grayish in complexion. So, while I love the typical makeup smell and easy application of the foundation, the fact that it did what it claims NOT to do--dull up skin--is what made me throw it in the trash bin.
