  • Benefit Powderflage Light Diffusing Power Concealer

I just had my training for Benefit since I work at Ulta and, despite the names and claims, Powderflage is not meant to take the place of your concealer. What the better and more appropriate purpose is to highlight lines (luminizers reflect the light when applied over wrinkles, making them less noticeable) and use over your favorite under-eye concealer to set it and add more luminosity to give a nice refreshed look. I wasn't convinced at first of the efficacy of this product, but I've used it a few times at work and I actually like it the more I use it. The little brush is perfect for the under-eye area and I love the way it looks layered over under-eye concealers, especially Bisque & Summer Bisque from Bare Minerals. If nothing else, you will look more refreshed!

    bareMinerals ORIGINAL SPF 15 Foundation

In contrast to many of the other reviews...

I've been wearing this foundation for about 5 years now and I have never had a problem with it. I am EXTREMELY oily, large pores, uneven skin tone--this is the only make-up that has ever worked for me. I have worked at Ulta for close to 2 years now and have seen this make-up side by side with every liquid, powder, mineral, cream, etc. and it does a phenomenol job. Let me address certain concerns specifically: Oily skin: This foundation is ideal for oily skin. Just like with nearly every other foundation on the market, a primer is always a good idea to extend the length of your make-up. Why else would almost every single make-up line carry a primer if it didn't make a difference? Trust me, it does. Pores: Primer. Even Smashbox falls into pores without primer. Dry skin: Contrary to popular belief, this foundation does work extremely well on dry skin. The key is having the right moisturizer to properly hydrate the skin. Using a primer also helps dramatically, and they have a new Hydrating Mineral Veil which makes a huge difference. Moisturizer: Please, please, PLEASE allow your moisturizer to absorb into your skin before applying this--or any--make-up. Especially with powders and mineral make-up, if you apply right after moisturizer it will not smooth onto the skin as flawlessly. Allow 3-5 minutes for your moisturizer to absorb, or invest in a primer which is applied directly after moisturizer. Primers require no absorption time before make-up application, and I can guarantee you that primers will solve every single one of your pores, fine lines, wrinkles, make-up won't last, shine, texture, etc. problems. Colors: Each color is classified as cool, neutral or golden. For most of the population, I have been able to successfully color match almost everyone I see. I will say that the darker skin tones are still lacking and may end up red or just too dark, which is my biggest complaint. I wear the exact same shade year round, and I am an Italian/American Indian/Euro mix, so I get very light in the winter and very, very dark in the summer. Time and time again I see clients come in trying to get a darker shade for their foundation--first things first, ladies: YOUR SKIN TONE DOES NOT CHANGE WHEN YOU TAN. You make get darker, but you will not go from a neutral to a cool or a cool to a warm. It just doesn't happen. That being said, if your shade is medium beige, you should NOT use medium tan in the summer because you will look ashy because it is a cool undertone while medium beige is a neutral. Invest in a good bronzer and that will take care of all of your problems. I personally use their powder called Faux Tan and it passes the picture test every time. In the sun I generally wear a hat or very high SPF on my face, so it always stays much lighter than my body. I always try to best match both the face and the neck for this reason exactly, and sometimes this may require use of Warmth or Faux Tan or another great bronzer to get the perfect look for your skin while your make-up still looks natural and blends at the jawline, rather than creating a line. Hyperpigmentation: I will say that this foundation doesn't cover as nicely as some of the heavier liquids and creams, but that is sort of across the board. For severe hyperpigmentation, a pretty heavy concealer or foundation is required. Coverage: If you find this make-up is settling into your pores or fine lines, hate to break it to you but you're not applying it correctly. I always have my clients show me how they apply their make-up when they have said complaints, and every single time I am able to alter their technique to give them the airbrushed finish they desire. If you are having these difficulties, please go to your nearest Ulta, Sephora or Bare Minerals store and speak with a professional who is very knowledgeable about Bare Minerals so they can show you a trick or two. Also, you can truly get the lightest to the heaviest coverage with this make-up depending on the brushes you use and the amount you apply. I have successfully covered many a client with severe, severe acne breakouts and made their skin look smoother, even-toned, and fully covered while still maintaining a very natural finish. That being said, I am not saying this is the perfect foundation for every single person out there but I do find that it performs above and beyond many of the other often much higher priced foundations on the market. Please have a professional really show you how to apply it best for your face--trust me, not everyone should apply this make-up in the same way which I have learned after applying it to thousands of women.
