  • Philosophy Purity Made Simple High Foaming Daily Cleanser

I am not in the majority on this by any means, but I'm not all that impressed with the new Philosophy Purity Made Simple Foaming Cleanser. I am a fan of the original Purity Made Simple, but this new foaming cleanser has been getting all kinds of rave reviews, so I thought I owed it to myself to try it. Frankly, I could have done without. I'm glad I got this as a sample at Sephora. I mean, it's a nice cleanser and all, but it's not that great. I didn't see the skies open and angels descending or anything. It didn't make my skin magically perfect. It's just a basic, nice cleanser. Just like one you could get at a drugstore. Buy it if you're a fan of the line, but honestly, it's no big whoop.

    Warren-Tricomi Protect Organic Hair Shield

I will never use this again!

Supposedly, this product coats your hair strands with an invisible shield (sounds like some kind of force field to me) in order to protect it from damage due to sun damage and other envionmental effects. I thought that my vacation would be a great time to test it, as I would be out in the heat and humidity all day and be getting in and out of the pool, all of which can do some serious damage to your hair. I have no idea whether this stuff does what it claims to do, but I'll tell you this - I don't like it and I won't use it again. It doesn't come out of the bottle evenly; you can't tell if you've coated all your hair in it; and it leaves behind this wretched residue that made my hair feel very sticky and clumped together. No es bueno. I'm really glad I receieved this as a sample because if I'd bought it, I'd want my money back.

  • Kevyn Aucoin Beauty Sensual Skin Enhencer

At $45, Sensual Skin Enhancer can be a hit to the pocketbook, particularly when you realize just how tiny the pot is. However, for such a multi-use product, it's a steal, especially when you consider that a pin-sized amount is enough to hide a myriad of sins. I have been using this little pot of miracle for several days and it has functioned primarily as spot treatment. I have used it under my eyes to hide dark circles, around my nose to counter redness and on dark spots left behind by previous pimples. And it rocks. That's all I can tell you. It's creamy and moisturizing, but not too much so and it blends in perfectly with my skin.

  • Three Custom Color Specialists Lip and Cheek Stain
    9.0

Three Custom Color Specialists Lip and Cheek Stain

    Great no makeup-looking makeup.

Three Custom Color's Ski Bunny Cheek/Lip Stain is, by far, the best stain I've had the pleasure of trying. I have tried others: Benetint, Bobbi Brown, Becca - and, I have to say, though I have liked them all, I have found 3 CC's stain to be the most truly versatile. It gives a beautiful flush of color to both my lips and cheeks and, even better, I don't find that the stain adds any oiliness to my cheeks at all. Even after hours, the flush of color is still vibrant. I love that it does give my lips that "I just ate a popsicle" effect without making them feel dry and chapped. I applied a touch of lip balm first and then the stain - hours later, I still had cherry-colored lips, with no flakes. Nice!

  • Bourjois Regard Effet Duochrome Eyeliner

Y'all! Y'all! Okay, I have rhapsodized over MAC's Kohl Power eye pencils with good reason - they are soft and smudgy and dark, with an added bit of color. They are the best eye pencils I have found - 'til now. I'm telling you they have to share the title with Bourjois Regard Effet Duochrome Eyeliner. When the MAC Kohl Power pencils came out, I didn't manage to snag all the ones I wanted, so I didn't get all the great colors. Well, I have to look no further! The Regard Effet Duochrome eyeliners are a great alternative. I bought the eyeliner in Noir Emeraude (black with shimmering emerald) and Noir Bleuté (black with brilliant sapphire blue). These pencils contain mother of pearl which gives it a metallic effect when applied to the eye. The colors are deep and intense and, unlike some other soft eye pencils, when you draw a narrow line, it doesn't smudge onto your eyelids throughout the day. Yay! I am in love with these pencils. If they were flavored, I would eat them up, that's how much I love them.

  • Bourjois Volume Clubbing Mascara
    4.0

    Bourjois Volume Clubbing Mascara

You have to work too hard ...

Volume Clubbing masara can be considered a good mascara, in that it does everything I want a mascara to do - it leaves you with ridiculously long lashes and they are extra, extra black. Great! However ... this mascara clumps instantly. It has a weird brush that's flattened in the middle. I've found, through trial and error, that the best way to apply this mascara is to use the flat side to get all the yummy inky blackness onto your lashes, then use the brushy parts to comb through the lashes about a billion times until you're left with perfectly defined, dark lashes. Another nasty little bit, though ... this stuff is a bear to get off. Last night, I doused a cotton ball with waterproof eye makeup remover, left it on my lids for a minute and the mascara didn't budge. I swiped and swiped, using three cotton balls - some was still there. By this time, it had become a huge, flaky mess and a huge flake had gotten into each eye! Oh, no. I am very sensitive about my eyes - that is a big ole no-no in my book. Even after washing my face with a creamy cleanser and using toner, I was still scrubbing at my lashes to get it off. If you're gonna be onstage or doing something else where you'd like to be sure your mascara is smear-proof this is the stuff (maybe that's why it's called Volume Clubbing - it's meant to be worn to the club when you're hot and sweaty) - but if you just want mascara for a regular old workday, it might not be worth it for the headache involved in taking it off. Buyer beware.

  • Bourjois Liner Clubbing
    5.0

    Bourjois Liner Clubbing

    Save your money

Bourjois Liner Clubbing is a perfectly fine, standard liquid eyeliner. There is nothing innovative or exciting about it. It comes in a small tube with a very thin brush. It dries fairly quickly. It stays put all day. It comes off easily with eye makeup remover. That's it. Those are the requirements for a good liquid liner and this product has them. But, if you want my opinion, go to the drugstore and buy Maybelline Ultra Liner and save yourself several bucks. Their effect is the same - you're just paying for the brand name, in this case.

  • Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder
    6.0

    Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder

A little goes a long way!

After having seen Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder touted all over the place, I decided to try it for myself. I got it in shade 2, which is supposedly best for medium to dark skintones. It still looks like an almost white translucent powder to me, which has a bit of luminescence to it. I applied my normal concealer first, then dusted a tiny bit of Secret Brightening Powder over it. Well, it works. It definitely brightens the look of dark undereye circle. This isn't really a concealer - it's just used to add some luminescence, which makes the skin appear lighter. I also have applied this over YSL Touche Eclat and it works wonders on a casual day, when I don't want to wear concealer or heavy foundation. Remember to be very light on your application - if you apply too much, you'll wind up with the reverse-raccoon look!

  • Vincent Longo Water Canvas Blush
    7.0

    Vincent Longo Water Canvas Blush

    Nice, but expensive

Vincent Longo Water Canvas Blush is an intriguing product. It has a texture that I never have experienced before. It feels very cool and spongy to the touch, almost like a stamp pad. When I touched it, I couldn't imagine how it would deposit the color to my fingers, but it did. When I pressed my finger against the product, I could see that a small amount of color did show up - I dotted it onto the apples of my cheeks and blended. It blended quite easily with my fingers and did build up to a quite natural, but noticeable flush. However, it did take three or four layers before I was able to achieve the look I wanted. If you're as intrigued as I am by this product, go ahead and try it out, but be advised, if you're a brown gal, it'll take some doing to achieve the depth of color you need.

  • MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator
    9.0

    MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator

    Weird, but awesome

MAC's Volcanic Ash Exfoliator is exactly what it sounds like: an exfoliant made from volcanic ash. But wait, there's more! This ash comes from live volcanoes on Vanuatu - yes, that Vanuatu - the one made famous in Survivor. Nice. I have to admit, I'm a bit weirded out by this. It is black and gritty. Now, of course, most exfoliants are gritty - they include those little scrubby things. This exfoliant is made of ash (which contains sulfur, wow and ick) and sugar crystals. This stuff is pungent. It's not funky, or anything, but it smells ... earthy is the best word for it, I guess. It smells like what I think a rainforest would smell like. Now, keep in mind, I have never been to an actual rainforest, so I have no frame of reference - this is just what I would imagine a rainforest smells like. I do have a very active imagination, for what it's worth. Anyway, I am happy to have pungent, earthy, famous ash on my face, I guess. However, I did freak myself out when I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. I looked like I was putting on blackface paint or something. It was bizarre. Having said all that, though, this stuff does work. My face felt like a baby's butt afterward - very, very soft and smooth. So, if you can get past the smell and the weirdness, you'll be pleased with the results, I think.
