  • PHYTO Phytojoba Hydrating Shampoo With Jojoba Oil

Perhaps you haven't read the convoluted, sad story of what happened to my hair. Years ago, it was quite strong, with natural waves and a shiny auburn color. I was regularly stopped on the street on my way to work by strangers asking who did my body wave (there was NO body wave) or colored my hair (the shade was my own). I simply washed it with Nexxus Shampoo and moisturized with one of their conditioners (this was when the products were only available in salons and the formulas were exceptional; I paid a small fortune for their items). A famous stylist in my city loved my hair and suggested that I use artificial coloring to make it even stunning. In my naiveté, I allowed him to dye it, and I realized that the peroxide and ammonia penetrated the hair shaft. It was never as resilient again; I was beyond angry! Shortly afterward, I had a mishap during eye surgery and was given injections and oral doses of Prednisone for pain; there was no other I could function. The steroids basically destroyed my once-exceptional hair. It began to thin, break very easily (especially at the ends), have fly-aways, and never had the multi-tonal hue or shine it once had. I needed major help. I believe that Phyto once advertised itself as a "vegetable bandage for hair." It certainly performs as a bandage. The scent reminds me of the "egg-cream" shampoos my mother and grandmother used when I was just a young child, luscious and delightful. The shampoo gleams in your hands and lathers richly. It's really not necessary to rinse and repeat the shampooing process unless your hair needs a good cleansing, but I find myself doing it out of sheer enjoyment. Normally when I rinse my hair after using even the best shampoos, there is a brillo-pad texture which a conditioner and a thermal protection oil repair. My hands glide through my own hair like silk sans any conditioning! This shampoo has Cornflower, Mallow Extract, and several oils: Coco, Colza, Palm, and Jojoba. Hair is made more resilient, shiny, and manageable, not to mention wonderfully soft. A gentle clean fragrance remains behind, and volume is enhanced. I am a huge Phyto fan, if you can't tell by now--you should be, too!

  • PHYTO Phyto 9 Daily Ultra Nourishing Cream With 9 Plant Extracts

Perhaps you haven't read the sad story of what happened to my hair. Years ago, it was quite strong, with natural waves and a brilliant auburn color. I was regularly stopped on the street on my way to work by strangers asking who did my body wave (there was NO body wave) or colored my hair (the shade was my own). I simply washed it with Nexxus Shampoo and moisturized with one of their conditioners (this was when the products were only available in salons and the formulas were exceptional; I willingly paid a small fortune for their items). A famous stylist in my city loved my hair and suggested that I use artificial coloring to make it even stunning. In my naiveté, I allowed him to color it, and I realized that the peroxide and ammonia penetrated the hair shaft. It was never as resilient again, and I was resentful. Shortly afterward, I had a mishap during surgery and was given injections and oral doses of Prednisone for pain; there was no other way to function. The steroids basically destroyed my once-gorgeous hair. It began to thin, break easily (especially at the ends), and never had the multi-tonal hue or shine it once had. I needed major help. I believe that Phyto once advertised itself as a "vegetable bandage for hair." I washed with the luxurious, splendid "Phytojoba Shampoo" and turned to "Phyto 9 Daily Ultra Nourishing Botanical Cream" for ultra-dry hair ($28.00 at Sephora). The ingredients read like a dream diary for organic nourishment: It is packed with Macadamia Nut Oil, Rosemary, Burdock, Sage, Calendula, Willow, Mallow, and St. John's Wort: These work overtime to penetrate the hair shaft and mend it (it is a leave-in conditioner). You simply apply a pea-size drop and work through hair, concentrating on ends. It is completely oil-free, but it is extremely powerful when it comes to mending dull, dry, frail hair. I stayed on the Phyto regimen for a long time, using only their products, until I looked "human" again. Now I can use less costly but effective items to keep my hair healthy. This cream was a life-saver for my damaged tresses!

  • Murad Energizing Pomegranate Lip Protector SPF 15

I lamented to a friend that my lips kept chapping and peeling, no matter what I did. The situation had gotten so bad that there were tiny cuts in my lips; lipstick application just seemed to exaggerate the situation, but I never leave the house without color on my lips (I could easily pass for a ghost). I was absolutely miserable. She seemed relaxed on the phone, told me to rest easy, and not to worry. I suspected she was up to something; a few days later, an envelope arrived at our home, with a tube of Murad's "Energizing Pomegranate Lip Protector SPF 15" and a note saying, "Here's an end to your problems." I love Murad products in general, and I especially liked the pretty sheer pink color of this balm and the wonderful smell. I learned early that a little goes a long way. It is not heavy or very glossy but does leave a layer of protection on my lips in a pretty, subtle rose shade. The layer stays on for several hours, even through eating and drinking. The real beauty of this product--and the reason why my friend sent it to me--is that it doesn't need to be continually reapplied. Pomegranate is a powerful antioxidant with its own natural sunscreen. It is actually a heavy-duty treatment. Dead, peeling cells are exfoliated from lips, and new ones are brought to the surface. It's not a "Catch 22"--apply, reapply, apply, reapply. After several days of using it, I found that I didn't actually need it any longer. However, I still continue to use it because I love the smell, the feel, and the shade. Just a word of advice: Since you're applying it to your mouth, use it on a clean finger so that the product is not contaminated in any way. It's another winner from Murad!

  • Aussie Moist 3 Minute Miracle Deeeeep Conditioner

Aussie Moist 3 Minute Miracle Deeeeep Conditioner

Excellent Conditioning at a Wonderful Price

Now that my hair is finally back in much more healthy shape than it once was, I still make sure to deep condition it regularly. Aussie Moist "Three Minute Miracle Deeeep Conditioner" may not be as robust as Frederic Fekkai's "Intensive Fortifying Mask," it does produce pleasant results. Australian Sea Kelp, Aloe Leaf Juice, and Jojoba Oil are just some of the ingredients that make hair stronger, shinier, and much softer. Dead ends are not nearly as evident after using this, and there is no obnoxious, heavy feel to my hair. The price is beyond reasonable--about $3.99--and I plan to keep it on hand for when my hair needs a boost of moisture and I could use extra self-confidence!

  • e.l.f. 144-piece Eyeshadow Palette in Neutral and Bright

Yes, I may be drawn to some pricier eye shadows, but for the price, these are great, blendable shadows in a good range of finishes--from matte to shimmer and all-out glitter. When used over a good primer, they last a long time and look absolutely beautiful. I don't understand how ELF is able to afford to offer them, but I'm certainly not complaining!

  • Ole Henriksen Balancing Cucumber Face Tonic
    10.0

Ole Henriksen Balancing Cucumber Face Tonic

    Yet Another Hooray for Ole!

A toner is necessary after cleansing your face, and Ole Henriksen's "Balancing Cucumber™ Face Tonic" takes toners to a higher, much more enjoyable level. In my young, more naive years, I equated toners with alcohol or an ingredient which left my skin tingling and sometimes burning. (I actually used pure alcohol for a short time, thinking that stripping my skin of all oils would stop occasional blemishes--I couldn't have been more wrong.) You don't need to have a burning sensation for a toner to work. You don't want to damage tender skin. It took me years to learn this. So why use a toner? A toner will completely remove all traces of dirt, grime, and any makeup which your cleanser may have left behind. Because soap and cleansers are alkaline in nature, your natural pH balance is disturbed. A toner will balance it again, bringing it to a slightly more acidic level, between five and six. Pores generally shrink with an astringent! Who couldn't love that? When pores are closed, impurities and environmental pollutants find it harder to make their way into cells. Toners with Glycolic or other AHA acids can inhibit ingrown hairs, which generally become blemishes with me. Henriksen's potion is all-natural, free of Parabens, Sulfates, Phthalates, and Synthetic Dyes. It has Cucumber Essence, Chamomile, and Ginseng. Chamomile softens and soothes any skin, especially skin which has been irritated. Citrus Extracts reduce inflammation. Cucumber works as a decongestant and tightens pores. Ginseng increases cellular energy, stimulating circulation. Also included in the mix are Glycerin, Allantoin, Aloe Leaf Juice, and Apricot Kernel Oil. You can either mist this spray directly on your face and neck or apply to clean cotton balls. It smells wonderful, cools and refreshes with no stinging, and Henriksen users swear that, with time, blackheads and blemishes are greatly diminished as well. Your complexion will have a new clarity and lucidity. I can't speak highly enough about this company--their products work wonderfully! They've taken years off my appearance.

  • Shiseido Lacquer Rouge
    9.0

    Shiseido Lacquer Rouge

    Lovely, Long-Lasting Color

I am always searching for a long-lasting lip color. Shiseido's "Lacquer Rouge" is a delight, akin to applying a layer of fine nail enamel on your lips. It is a rich lipstick with intense pigment that will take you from your first cup of morning coffee to a pre-dinner cocktail with ease. You can control how much pigment your lips receive by how much you blend in while applying (for the "full force" of color, use the doe-foot wand directly on your pout; otherwise, dot and blend with a clean finger or a lip brush). With continued use, lips are supposed to be moisturized and peeling and flaking reduced to a minimum. I found that to be true with this. It's simply excellent, the colors incredible!

  • Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo
    10.0

    Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo

A Must-Use for Every Hair Type!

A fellow teacher came to school on a Monday and her hair was simply STUNNING--soft, smooth, and very shiny. I asked what she did, and she told me that her stylist recommended removing the buildup from shampoos, conditioners, and styling products periodically. She did so over the weekend with a mix of baking soda and water. You can do the same in a much easier manner with Neutrogena's "Anti-Residue" Shampoo. Warning, please: This is a strong shampoo, not meant for everyday use (once a week is more than enough). Be forewarned that, like Lush's "Big" Shampoo, any artificial hair color can and probably will be stripped with this. It doesn't lather well, and so you may find yourself using more than usual. I leave it in for several minutes. So why do it? Hair is completely refreshed and revitalized. Volume is greatly restored. Just about every last bit of unwanted, harmful chemicals wash down the drain when you rinse. This is appropriate for all hair types and may help those with oily hair to cut down on the times they need to shampoo. Don't expect silken strands when you're finished shampooing, however. Hair will be squeaky clean, but the shaft has been "disturbed" by the cleansing elements. You may find it necessary to use a deep conditioner to keep from damaging your hair, but you will be grateful you did this in the long run.

  • EMK Placental Face Cream
    7.0

    EMK Placental Face Cream

Works Perfectly, But Far Too Costly

I'm all about caring for my skin. In my mind, I am "caught" between the ages of eighteen and twenty-three, when blemishes were sometimes a problem but my skin, in general, was taut, glowing, and had a clarity which was enviable. I was continually pulled aside on the street and in stores and asked what regimen I used. I treated my skin gently ever since I was a child and used good products. I don't want to part with a good complexion as I age and I don't have to do so, actually, if I keep caring for it well. I had an offer to review EMK Placental Face Cream for free from a cosmetic company and jumped on it. Normally my budget doesn't allow me to pay $90 for a moisturizer. I had heard and read about this--evidently dermatologists, plastic surgeons, estheticians, and celebrities favor this particular line and product. The philosophy behind it is to harness the attributes of natural plant placenta to boost cell renewal, oxygenate skin, defend your complexion from free radical damage, and improve the "communication" between cells. EMK puts a complex called Bio-Identical Plant Placental Extract in all of its products, including this facial cream. For all of its ingredients, this cream is surprisingly lightweight and seeps into skin easily and quickly. It is a pleasure to apply, as it is instantly comforting and cooling. Along with the aforementioned extract, Seabuckthorn Oil and Vitamin A are included to enhance its benefits. It is meant to repair deep lines and wrinkles. Fortunately, I don't have these, only some annoying, inherited "parentheses" around my mouth. I first used it at night. The next day my skin was akin to velvet. A week later, the "parentheses" were diminished somewhat and I had a new, taut feel. This did deeply hydrate my face and neck, and my husband noticed the difference. I had him try it. He loved it as well; he said, in a complementary way, that his face felt more "rubbery" (his way to describe pliable and firm). I would give this ten stars, but I can't justify the ridiculous price, especially when I can get a whole set of Ole Henriksen's or Mary Kay's amazing skin care items for the same money or much less. Although I love it, I won't be buying it again. Other products function just as well and don't break the bank.

  • Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter

    Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter

    Glorious, Moisturizing Color!

It's rare that you'll find me without my "Tangee Color-Changing Lipstick" or another one of my favorite lip colors or stains, but I received Revlon's "Colorburst Lip Butters" with Total Beauty's gorgeous spring color set. The shades which I received are absolutely beautiful--"Sorbet" and "Pink Lemonade." I was afraid that "Sorbet" might be a little too lively and "Pink Lemonade" a tad too pale, both became glorious, totally wearable shades of rose on my lips. The coverage is very lightweight, and you do get a comforting burst of moisture along with color. I was surprised at how long this hue remained in place. What an absolute delight! Total Beauty chose the perfect shades; I'm going to choose some additional ones!
