NARS Light Optimizing Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 15

Good priming action, fresh scent & bonus SPF! :)

I applied a pea size amount underneath my makeup each day for two weeks. The lotion sunk into my skin and smoothed the appearance of enlarged pores. Plus, I love the SPF 20 (can’t have too much of that these days!). My mineral makeup blended out more easily with this product; and even with Tinted Moisturizer overtop of the primer, I did not get greasy or over moisturized. I did notice that my makeup seemed to stay put for the day (no wandering off now!). I have never used a makeup primer before this product (just standard face lotion), and hence, never really understood what all the fuss was about. Now I understand. I can use a little less of my makeup product since the primer allows for improved and even coverage. The NARS primer is also available in a non-SPF formula (white tube). Both are packed in a modern “rubberized” tube which makes it nice and grippy. The twist top tube is sanitary and helps keep out contaminants. One other note, when I opened the NARS tube, I immediately feel in love with the slight creamsicle scent of this primer. It’s fresh, fruity, and perks me right up in the mornings. I will certainly be keeping this product around for everyday use and plan to repurchase.

  • Revlon Just Bitten Lipstain + Balm
    8.0

Revlon Just Bitten Lipstain + Balm

Fab lip stain- great colors, long lasting

Revlon’s Just Bitten is available at most Targets, Walgreens, CVS or drugstores for $10-12. The color goes on well if your lips are clean and dry (don’t put balm on before hand. The packaging is nice: just a clear tube with a roller ball for application. The stain is more like a gel which goes on smoothly. There is a bit of “fruity” smell to the stain. In normal wear, the stain lasted about 4 hours with drinking, eating, talking, etc not affecting it. You will probably need to apply a balm on top, or a gloss if you do not want a matte finish.

L'Oreal Paris HiP Studio Secrets Professional Shocking Shadow Pigments

Nice application, long-wearing, Make fantastic eye look bases!

L’Oreals HIP (High Intensity Pigment) line has released a new offering: Cream Paints eyeshadows. Some people are having a hard time locating the new tubes (similar to MAC’s paints), but I found a few at my local drugstore (and for $2 off). They retail around $11.50 for a tube and currently come in 5 shades of browns/neutrals. I picked up Lofty (a light peach shimmer), and Nervy (a dark smoky brown shimmer). Lofty makes a grand base/primer for under your other eyeshadows or stand-alone color for quick natural days. Nervy is perfect for evening or creating a brown smokey eye. Both apply very easily and are highly pigmented (warning- use only a dab). I found the brush that was packaged with the paints lacking, but the paints go on easily with your finger or a concealer-type brush. As for wearability, there was no creasing and they dried quickly, and retained color through the day. Besides the included brush, my other complaint is that the tubes seem to seep a jelly-like substance if you do not store them upright. I guess it’s a small price to pay though.

  • Hard Candy Ginormous Mascara

    Hard Candy Ginormous Mascara

Fab mascara - ulra cheap, doesn't flake and lots of fun colors!

I try tons of mascaras every year and the majority don't pass muster. Hard Candy's Ginormous Lash volumizing mascaras are ultra-affordable, don't flake, smudge or wander; and they really do make your lashes look thicker. All for under ten bucks! The Ginormous lash mascaras come in black, bronze, silver, purple and blue. Since I adore unusual mascara colors - I picked up Dime and Purple Haze. The application wand is an exact duplicate to Dior Show's Iconic mascara wand (Dior Show for some reason has tons of fans - it's way too pricey for me and the formula isn't really that great in my testing). The wand is a rubberized comb style (very similar to my beloved Physician's Formula Mineral Wear mascara), with rubber bristles all-the-way-around. It makes the mascara easy to apply on upper and lower lashes; plus it reaches close to your lash line and into the corners. Purple Haze looks like a bright pastel purple in the tube, but darkens on your lashes to a deeper purple after about five minutes. Dime is simply a bright silver mascara. Love it! Both colors look great alone (with simple eye makeup), or apply black mascara first then use the colorful Hard Candy Ginormous mascaras just on your lash tips as a highlight. Highlighting the lash tips will really pop open up your eyes... hint, hint for those days when you're lacking sleep. Another bonus? Hard Candy does not test their makeup, cosmetics or beauty products on fuzzy animals!

  • Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser
    6.0

    Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser

Great value, but can be drying for sensitive gals

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser is billed as a face wash that removes makeup, does not clog pores, contains no fragrance and doesn’t disturb skin’s natural pH balance. After trying this wash for ten days, it may be right for some folks out there. However, it dried out my skin more than usual (due to the alcohols in the contents?). The texture is nice- smooth and fluid. The scent is similar to pHisoderm which is fragrance-free as well but there is a slight “scent” there. Cetaphil did receive Allure’s Best of Beauty Hall of Fame award. Value is terrific- an 8oz container of Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser can last you up to 6 months. I’d suggest you wash once with Cetaphil to remove the makeup and gunk on your face, then again to actual clean the skin and pores. I found this wash works very well with a wash cloth a couple times a week to gently exfoliate skin. This wash is truly MUCH easier on your skin than the heavily scented, beaded washes commonly found on drugstore shelves. Just be sure to continue your normal skin care routine (whether it’s toner, serum, sunscreen and/or lotions). Before you commit to an entire jug, I would ask your drugstore if they have any samples for you to try. Then you can decide for yourself if this wash is for you.

  • Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream
    8.0

Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream

Nice moisture & results. Smells fresh!

Everyone knows Burt’s Bees and the company’s infamous, and continued, good deeds to the human kind. So when presented the opportunity to test a competitor’s product, I was pysched! And honestly, for the simple reason that I often wonder if a product is as good as the brand name that it is backed by. One problem area in particular that I knew that a product would have to come shining through (as bright as Rodulph’s nose in a Christmas eve blistering snow storm in fact)- my cuticles. Picture this horrid image if you will- dry, undernourished, and jagged cuticles. Bah humbug! So, I assigned my left hand to the challenging Green by Nature, and my right to the champion, Burt’s Bees (both lemon butter scented). Honestly, I’m not much for a lemon scent, so I was actually extremely excited (and relieved) to open Green’s almost banana smelling cream (one point for Green). The textures of both products varied tremendously. Green’s creme is slick, therefore much more easily applied. However it did in fact dry quickly, so the “greasy” feeling that I felt at first dip did not last too long. Burt’s, on the other hand was a much harder, more wax-like feel. This may sound a bit harsh, but I felt like I needed to rustle up my pumpkin carving tools again to use this product! The product you choose should really be dependent on the texture you prefer, because I must admit that after a week of ritual AM and PM application, both products won my praise. My cuticles are in better shape now than ever! However, to be true to the product that will remain on my nightstand- Green by Nature rocked. The delicious scent and delicate feel actually softened my cuticles and strengthened my nails.

  • Liz Earle Orange Flower Hand Wash

Liz Earle Orange Flower Hand Wash

Super clean hands with this gentle cleanser!

Rough hands from winter? Cracking from early spring gardening? Just want a super luxurious hand wash by the kitchen sink? Liz Earle's new offerings "Hand Repair" cream lotion and "Orange Flower Hand Wash" to the rescue! I've had both planted next to my sink for over a month now and they are just plain lovely. Even the Bionic Hubby commented on how much he liked the Hand Wash. We were both bummed when our bottles ran out last week. Granted they are a little pricey, but quite often we spend eleventy thousand (thanks to the Cheap Chick for that phrase!) on our face skin care but neglect how our hands. Your hands can age quickly - and get abused daily. So a little extra pampering here and there is a good thing. The Orange Flower Hand Wash is light, produces quick suds and deep cleans grime without stripping moisture from your hands, cuticles and nails. The scent lingers with a nice herbal and floral after note. I followed up each wash with a dose of Hand Repair to help resolve my rough winter skin and my gardening cracks... yes, I forget to wear gloves most of the time. It's a great cream lotion - soaks in quick. The best part? It's packed with natural antioxidants and anti-aging herbals.

Aveda Dry Remedy Moisturizing Treatment Masque

    Fab moisturizer for weekly treatments!

After testing the first two products in the family, I didn't expect much from the Dry Remedy Masque. However, I was pleasantly surprised. I used this as a twice weekly, deep-conditioning treatment and my hair really benefited. It didn't leave me flat, greasy or oily. My hair had enough bounce and it worked wonders after I colored my hair. Great restorative hair masque! So far, this is the one Aveda hair product that I've really enjoyed testing.

    Aveda Dry Remedy Moisturizing Conditioner

    Left my hair too "bed-heady"

Well, bascially everything I said about the Shampoo applies to the Dry Remedy Conditioner. It's a good product, but nothing stellar. Again, the scent is wonderful, but my fine, colored hair was a flyaway and overly-bed-headed mess after use.
