    Chapstick True Shimmer

A New Twist On The Old Classic

I was invited to test out all four varietes, so I pulled them out at a recent bookclub and asked some friends to help me try them out. The Botanical Berry has a very pale pink tint and smells like berries (not sure what the botanical refers to). Tropical has a slight nude tint and smells like pina coladas. Peppermint Rush is a very strong peppermint that tingles and has a silvery tint. Blended Fruit Shimmer had the most color of the four varieties - a purple tint and smells like almonds. Everyone liked the first three varieties, but the Blended Fruit Shimmer was universally disliked. It didn’t smell at all like fruit - just like almond paste and the purple color was odd looking. It reminded me of the fruity lip balms that are aimed at tweens. The Peppermint was a hit with most everyone - everyone really like the tingling sensation. My favorite is the Botanical Berry - I like the slight fruity scent. The shimmer on all but the Peppermint is so subtle, however, that I wouldn’t really consider it different that just wearing a plain lip balm. If however, you don’t like your lips to be bare, not even for a second - while working out, while sleeping - this might give you just enough pizazz to feel covered.

    Completely Bare Completely Smooth

Not worth the money - you still have to shave

I was worried that the formula would be harsh, smelly or even tingly. It combines the hair removal with a moisturizer, so it didn't feel any different than using lotion - and it might save you even more time but not having time to moisturize separately. But having to apply it twice a day probably took up any time saved, so maybe it's a timesaving wash. It also smells really good with a blend of magnolia, jasmine, bergamot, and vanilla. All in all, it was just like using any other lotion. I already have fine blond hair, so I can generally get away with not shaving for a few days, but while using this lotion I still had to shave. I used it twice a day for 2 weeks (I didn't used it the full 28 days in the interest of getting this review done) and kept up with my regular shaving. At the end of the 2 weeks I let my hair grow out a little to see if it worked. I couldn't really tell a difference. But like I said I already have fine blond hair and I didn't give it the full 28 days. But it didn't smell weird or feel funny.

Max Factor Vivid Impact Lip Color

    Rich color and rich moisture

This is a super rich lipstick: rich in color and rich in moisturizers. If you prefer a sheer color on your lips, approach this lipstick with caution. While the colors are rich, they don’t look heavy or cakey like the heavy, matte lipsticks of our youth. They are super moisturizing, so they have a nice shiny look. The moisturizers feel great and don’t wear off faster than the color (once again, unlike the heavy, matte lipsticks of our youth). I tried a light pink shade that was very light. I felt like I was wearing tinted zinc oxide. But then I tried applying it with a lighter hand and it looked quite pretty. So if you are used to a more sheer lip shade, you may have to adjust your application technique.

Max Factor 2000 Calorie Extreme Lash Plumper

This is the same mascara as Cover Girl Last Blast, but costs more

I recently received a sample of Max Factor’s 2000 Calorie Extreme Lash Plumper. The 2000 Calorie Extreme Lash Plumper mascara looked strangely familiar, and then it clicked! This mascara is the exact same mascara as Cover Girl’s Lash Blast mascara. Actually, it’s not the exact same - the tube is black and it costs more. But otherwise, they are the exact same brush and formula. Max Factor and Cover Girl are owned by the same company and both are using an ad campaign using the term “Luxe”. I absolutely love Lash Blast and since Max Factor’s version is the same, so I’ll refer you to the reviews of Lash Blast.

    Kerastase Double Force

    Strong and soft

I'm not really a hairspray kind of gal, but lately I've had the chance to try a few new formulas. Hairspray has really grown up! Gone are the sticky formulas that left you with helmet head - although I'm sure you can still find those types of hairspray if you like that look. If you're like me, you want a hairspray to help hold your style without making your hair stiff. Kerastase's new Double Force Controle Ultime sounds like a super duper hairspray, but it's really more of a gentle giant. Even with its extra stength hold, this formula is actually designed to help protect weak hair. The idea is that the hairspray will help strengthen weak hair - kind of like a cast on a broken bone. I'd never thought to use hairspray in this way. I'd only ever used hairspray on an updo to help it stay in place, so I have this hairspray a try just on my hair worn down. Right now, my hair is in good shape - very little breakage or split ends - so I can't attest to how this works on weak hair. But I did like how my hair look with this hairspray on - not stiff or shiny, just like my regular hair. I could definitely feel the hairspray on, but was still able to run my fingers through my hair. At the end of the day, my hair looked better than it usually does - no need to brush out the frizzies and flyaways that I usually get. A also liked the smell of this spray. It wasn't too strong when I applied it and the smell didn't linger. I hate smelling hairspray all day so I was happy that I basically forgot I had this on until I got home. I also used it on an updo and it did a good job of helping keep my hair in place and kept the flyaways at bay. An added plus to this spray is that it provides UV protection - helping your color last longer.

    L'Oreal Paris EverPure Moisture Shampoo

    Protect Your Color and Moisturize

I recently started dying my hair again. I had stopped for awhile while I was pregnant, but a few months into motherhood, I started to feel a bit drab and hit the home hair color box. As a busy mom I don't have a lot of time to go to the salon to keep up my color or even a lot of time to touch up my roots at home, so I'm using products to help it last. Recently I've been using L'Oreal EverPure Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner. These hydrating formulas are free of sulfates (harsh cleansers that can strip your color) and made with 100% vegan ingredients. Sulfates help cleansers lather, but this shampoo lathers just fine without them. It also smells great! It contains rosemary and juniper so it has a very fresh and invigorating smell. The conditioner has rosemary and mint so it's a tiny bit tingly and refreshing to use. Both left my hair feeling super soft and smelling great. As for helping my color last, it's hard to say whether or not the shampoo and conditioner are working, but I do like using a gentle shampoo. Living in a dry climate really dries my hair out and a gentle shampoo will help me keep the moisture I do have.

  • Frizz-Ease Straight Ahead Style-Starting Daily Shampoo

The Straight Ahead Shampoo and Conditioner were both rich formulas with a subtle scent. The shampoo lathered well and the conditioner left my hair feeling sleek after only a one minute application. I air dried my hair one day and blew it straight on another. On the air dry day I noticed a decrease in the frizzies, but they were still there. On the blow dry day, my style was definitely sleeker and my hair didn’t feel as dry throughout the day as it had been.

  • Frizz-Ease Curl Around Style-Starting Daily Shampoo

The Curl Around Shampoo and Conditioner were rich formulas with a similar scent to Straight Ahead. The shampoo seemed similar, but the conditioner seemed a bit lighter (it is a delicate balance to get a conditioner that is moisturizing enough for curly hair, but not so heavy that it weighs down the curl). Air drying produced similar results to the Straight Ahead - less frizz, but still frizzy. On the day I styled it wavy (I blow dry until almost dry, then twist into princess-Leia style buns and let it down when completely dry) I had frizz-free waves that stayed that way longer throughout the day.

  • L'Oreal Paris Double Extend Beauty Tubes

Reading the packaging of L'Oreal's new DoubleExtend Beauty Tubes Mascara, made me skeptical. Using this mascara will make my lashes appear 80% longer? That's quite the claim! But the premise sounded like it might actually work. You start out with the conditioning base coat from one end of this double ended tube. The base coat builds "tubes" along the tips of each lash, extending their length. Then you switch to the other end of the tube where the mascara is at and apply it over the base coat. I tried this mascara for a week and just could not get the hang of it. The base coat went on easily enough, but the top coat got gunky real fast. I tried different techniques: waiting a few minutes for the base coat to dry, combing my lashed before applying the top coat, applying only one layer of top coat, combing after the top coat, etc. The problem was that more that one swipe of the top coat would gunk up the lashes and they'd start clumping together. As for the lengthening - yeah, my lashes looked a little bit longer, but nowhere near 80% longer. If you have shorter lashes, you may like the little extra length, but this is definitely not lash extensions in a bottle. The packaging does claim that it won't smudge or flake, which it didn't. Despite looking like spider legs, the mascara wore well all day. One cool think is that it then rinses off with just water. The not so cool think is that it turns stringy and sticks to everything as you try to wash it off. I tried makeup remover to see if it would be easier, but it wouldn't really take it off. The best thing I found was a wash cloth with water - although you then can't use the washcloth on the rest of your face or else you'll get black mascara stringies all over. So all in all, not the best. It's a good try, but could certainly stand to be retooled. L'Oreal is definitely on to something, but missed the mark this time.
