Navigating the beauty product market in the 21st century.

I was just replying to a thread and it made me think about writing a separate blog regarding the overwhelming number of product choices we have today. The thread was a total beauty member noting the 30+ product types of shampoo & conditioner (sold under the same product name) that there were to choose from, and her difficulty in locating the same product she purchased in the past.
I'm not surprised. I went shampoo & conditioner shopping a few weeks ago and yes, the brand has a 4+ wide section of shelving in the guestimated 30 feet of shelf space available. Wow. But there's a reason for this.
Many personal product manufacturers package the same exact product in several different package designs to attract a wider consumer base and to get you to buy their product. I first noticed this several summers ago, when sunscreen shopping. I was looking for something with no fragrance in it, and after reading several ingredient labels from a well-known brand name, I finally put three different products side by side and they were identical. I kid you not. Plus I noticed they will put the same exact product in a small tube and specify it is for the face (and charge more.)
