Sensitive Skincare Routine

Well, summer is nearly over and I have made it through all of the heat, humidity, and sweat without any massive skin problems! I can't remember the last time I could say that, and I owe it all to my new skincare routine.

Having sensitive skin makes it difficult to come up with a routine because changing products can lead to irritation and breakouts. It took me a long time to finally settle on a decent group of products that make my skin look and feel healthy. My skin type is sensitive, dry-combination, and prone to minor blemishes (it was acne prone and oily for a long time, but I completed a course of Accutane earlier this year, so this is my new skin type).

My current routine:

Morning:

Paula's Choice RESIST Optimal Results Cleanser

Paula's Choice Advanced Replenishing Toner

Paula's Choice 1% BHA Gel

Clinique City Block Sheer SPF25

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer SPF15 (I mix this with the Clinique one to lighten the color because the tint is too dark for my very fair skin; the Hourglass primer is white.)

Makeup - Make Up For Ever HD Full Cover Concealer where needed, Laura Mercier Mineral Powder SPF 15,  and Tarte Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blush (I also where eye and lip makeup)

Evening:

Paula's Choice Gentle Touch Makeup Remover (eye makeup)

Sephora Supreme Cleansing Oil (face makeup only since it has fragrance)

Paula's Choice RESIST Optimal Results Cleanser using the Clarisonic Delicate Brush

Paula's Choice Advanced Replenishing Toner

Paula's Choice 2% BHA Gel

Paula's Choice Skin Recovery Hydrating Serum with Retinol

The cleanser is a gentle cream cleaner that works really well to clean my skin without stripping it. Compared to Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser and CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser, Optimal Results is my favorite because it works best; all three are quite gentle though.

The toner hydrates and soothes my skin while adding some antioxidants. It is the only toner my skin will tolerate because it contains no harsh ingredients. This products is great for removing sweat after a workout too if you don't get directly in the shower (I like to eat first, so I wipe my face with this toner, eat, then shower post workout).

The BHA gels (salicylic acid) exfoliate the pores deeply, reduce inflammation, and prevent breakouts. My skin is smooth, flake-free, and radiant. I use the 1% during the day to keep my skin from getting too dry while keeping everything calm under my sunscreen and makeup. If you have really dry skin, you may want to try an AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid treatment instead (Glycolic Acid), and/or exfoliate at night only.

Both sunscreens only use Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide for their active ingredients, something extremely important if you have sensitive skin. (See my previous blog entry on sunscreen.)

At night, I use the stronger BHA gel because I like to use my more active ingredients at night when my skin will not be exposed to the sun or smothered in sunscreen and makeup. I apply the Skin Recovery Antioxidant Serum with retinol after the BHA gel and it is hydrating enough that I do not need an additional moisturizer. My skin feels hydrated, smooth, and happy with these products. In the morning, my face is neither greasy nor dry.

I may need more moisture in the winter, but this routine has been perfect for the summer and has kept my skin looking and feeling its best! I have had a few very minor breakouts (1-4 small pimples), but they go away very quickly without any additional treatment.

Paula's Choice (www.paulaschoice.com) is a skincare and makeup brand that uses solid medical research when selecting all of the ingredients used in their products. They design every product without fragrance and known irritants. On top of that, they ensure that everything is formulated with the correct pH to ensure the product works properly (think exfoliants). If all of that wasn't awesome enough, their products are reasonably priced!

Paula Begoun, the founder of the company, has written several books on skincare and has a website - www.beutypedia.com, where she reviews skincare and makeup products from tons of companies to help all of us buy the best products for our skin! She has helped my a LOT through this website. I have the Beautypedia app on my phone, so I can check any item I want to buy before I make the purchase.

I hope this overview of my sensitive skin routine will help at least one of you out there!

If you would like a more in depth review of anything I have mentioned, please leave a comment and I will write one.

Until next time,

Sensitisma
