Please Do Not Use Day Creams With Retinol

I was shocked to read in the July, 2012 issue of a popular fashion magazine, that they recommended many day cream products with Retinol, such as Skincare Cosmetics Day Cream with Retinol.

Retinol should never be used during the day according to WebMD and what I learned in studying for my Cosmetology degree. Web MD says "Retinol causes skin turnover and the new skin is delicate and should NOT (emphasis addded) be exposed to the sun.  That is why Retinol should only be found in products intended for night use.  They break down when exposed to the sun and air.  That's why Retinol-containing products should always come in a pump or tube with a tight fitting cap.  Once opened, these products do not keep well and should be used.  ...in daytime products, Retinol will have the OPPOSITE (emphasis added) effect and actually make skin age faster because it (the skin) is more susceptible to the sun no matter the amount of SPF protection promised on the product.  A good rule of thumb is never buy a product with SPF and retinol in its list of ingredients.  To learn more about this, Google should Retinol be used during the day.

I've also read the WebMD article, and I believe it is misleading. Using retinols during the daytime is not going to have the opposite effect- this is a common myth. The reason that retinol products should not be used during the day is that they are very unstable in UV light and will breakdown. Bottom line- they wont work when exposed to light (sunblock does not protect the molecules from degrading) and you'll be wasting your money. So it's better to use them at night since they will be more effective. Which brings me to my next point.... retinols do promote skin turnover, which is why you should always use a sunscreen- whether your applying the product during the day or night. The skin turnover process is gradual, which is why a lot of retinol products say that it may take 8 weeks to see results. The skin is not immediately more delicate after applying the product. So if you are using a retinol product everynight (or everyday) your skin is constantly renewing and will always be more vulnerable to UV rays. It doesn't matter what time of day you apply it, you always need to use a sunscreen. Using a retinol product during the day will not make you more wrinkly. Logically think about it- if the sun is degrading the product so that is it not effective, then it's not working and not promoting skin turnover... and if it's not doing what it's supposed to be doing, then you can't be more vulnerable to more damage. But if you want to get the most benefit from a retinol product, use it at night. There is a lot of innacurate information on the internet about retinol, mine info is based on my PhD in physiology and articles published in scientific journals.

what? I had no idea. This article on total beauty says you should use daytime retinols because there is a difference between retinoic acid and retinols... The article is called: WHY YOU NEED A DAYTIME RETINOL NOW

Just remember that the fashion mags are the same ones that photo shop everything. I don't think they worry about anything other than sales.

This was really helpful information for those of us interested in retinol. Most of the products that I've researched with retinol are intended for night time use only, but I will most certainly remember the rule about not buying anything that has spf and retinol. I guess it makes sense that the retinol would only leave your skin more vulnerable to the damaging effects of the sun. Thank you for the important info!
