Hayden Panettiere & Vanessa Hudgens Dish Their Top Beauty Secrets
We've watched as these young stars grew up on their respective "High School Musical" and "Hero" days -- and at Neutrogena's 2nd Annual "Wave for Change by Helping Kids Make a Difference" in Los Angeles, I got some exclusive chat time with Hayden Panettiere and Vanessa Hudgens. I asked about their flawless skin and fearless commitments to getting pixie cuts. Panettiere was one of the first celebs to go boy short with her hair back in April '10. And Hudgens just chopped hers for a movie role.
"If I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it all the way," says Hudgens. She cut off her signature wavy long hair for a tousled pixie, thanks to her role in the upcoming film, "Gimme Shelter," in which she plays an orphan tomboy. "I had time to prepare myself for it. And I had my hands in there, and cut some of my hair myself. It's all for the love of the art."
Panettiere says going short is "thrilling." "I really did short," says the 21-year-old actress. "I went short short with super short sides at one point, so I feel like I got it out of my system for a while. It was thrilling, chopping your hair off, starting new."
When it comes to styling their pixies, however, they commiserate on how difficult it is to manage short hair that's also curly.
"You think that short hair would be really easy [to maintain]. But no, it's the exact opposite," says Hudgens. "I have to straighten the tiniest little pieces 'cause if I don’t I look like Bozo the Clown."
Panettiere agrees, saying she used to have "little curls that jetted out on all sides of my head. When you have a bad hair day, you're just done."
While Hudgens hasn't quite figured out how to style her short do just yet, they both swear by Neutrogena Triple Moisture Cream Lather Shampoo and Conditioner. "It smells amazing and it makes my hair soft and shiny. When you're dealing with blonde hair, it's really a struggle to keep it shiny and healthy," says Panettiere.
In addition to Hudgens' cropped cut, I couldn't take my eyes off of Panettiere's flawless, glowing skin. She told me she doesn't lay out in the sun or hit the tanning beds, so what's her secret?
While Panettiere thanks the little Italian blood in her for her olive complexion, she shares her step-by-step process to get her faux glow.
"Not many people tan evenly, so that’s always a hurdle. If you fall asleep with your hand on your stomach or wearing sunglasses, you get a white handprint or raccoon eyes," she says. "It's just easier to put on sunscreen and sunless tanner. It's even and you can control it better. I love Neutrogena MicroMist Airbrush Sunless Tan, and the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Custom Glow Blush & Bronzer Duo. It gives you a nice sun-kissed look without going out in the sun."
Hudgens chimes in, "And you don’t have to worry about as many wrinkles as you get older."
Their secret to flawless skin?
Panettiere says, "Neutrogena has this great skin-clearing base makeup. It not only covers but it also prevents you from getting breakouts. Especially for us when we're on set all day long. We're sweating and the lights are glaring and we're putting makeup on top of makeup -- by the end of the day our skin is screaming at us. It's really important to have a good base makeup that's helping you."
Hudgens chimes in with her secret: "For me, staying hydrated is key. And always trying to keep your face clean and letting it breathe. Never go to bed with makeup on. Just keep makeup remover wipes next to your bed. I always bringNeutrogena Makeup Removing Cleansing Towelettes with me, because I get lazy a lot of the time. It's nice to have [them] with you after you’ve flown and feel dirty and want to clean yourself up -- they're perfect."
And of course, no beauty conversation is over without the favorite product talk.
Panettiere says she never leaves the house without "My trusty Neutrogena MoistureShine Lip Gloss." (Just in case you're wondering, her shade is Super Sparkle 100.)
"I actually love that gloss. I have that in my purse," says Hudgens.
"I also always keep that blush and bronzer duo [with me]," says Panettiere. It's two-in-one, which is great because my bag gets clustered -- I have a pharmacy in my bag."
