The Mascara Diaries
Mascara…every girls-go to beauty product. The one thing we cannot live without! Tell me I’m lying, I dare you! The black (or brown) goopy-goodness that coats our lashes creating a feminine fringe around our eyes, the search for the perfect mascara never ends…or does it?
I have tried a multitude of mascaras from drugstore brands to high-end department store lines and one thing stands out…it doesn’t really matter how much it costs, what matters is how it looks. Here’s what we want in a mascara (or at least what I want):
- High Intensity Color
- No Flaking
- No Smudging
- Quality AND Value
- Good for Our Lashes
Over the course of the last year I have tried the following mascaras:
- L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara (Original): Blackest Black ($6.99, Ulta)
- L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara: Blackest Black ($8.99, Ulta)
- L’Oreal Extra Volume Collagen Mascara: Black ($8.99, Ulta)
- Diorshow Mascara: Black ($24.50, Sephora)
- Diorshow Blackout Mascara: Kohl Black 099 ($24.50, Sephora)
- Diorshow Iconic Mascara: Black 090 ($28, Sephora)
- Covergirl LashBlast Fusion: Black ($7.99, Target)
- Lancôme Definicils: Black ($25, Sephora)
Some I love, some I don’t. I LOVE the regular Diorshow Mascara in Black but what I don’t love is the price. I buy a new tube of mascara every 1-2 months and for me, it’s just not economical. So, I’ve been on the hunt for a mascara that meets my qualifications stated above and one TOTALLY stands out for me: I absolutely love L’Oreal’s Extra Volume Collagen Mascara. It is a really good dupe for the Diorshow because the wands are very similar as is the formula, but it’s LESS THAN half the price. I love it so much that I buy all they have in stock at either Target or Ulta (wherever I happen to be) so that I never run out. I’m probably good for another 8 months at this point. If you’re looking for a mascara that thickens your lashes with a ridiculous amount of volume and very little clumping, the L’Oreal Extra Volume Collagen Mascara is what you’re looking for.
My least favorite of the above would have to be the Covergirl LashBlast Fusion mascara. The brush is too big and the formula leaves a lot to be desired. It took FOR-EVER to get the results I wanted and in comparison to both Diorshow and L’Oreal Extra Volume, it took 5 times the coats. The only requirement it met was price and that’s just not good enough for me.
