Book Review: About Face by Scott Barnes

Scott Barnes is one of the most well known celebrity makeup artists in the industry. He has worked with A-List celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez, who is on the cover of his book. Scott Barnes' About Face: Amazing Transformations Using the Secrets of the Top Celebrity Makeup Artist is a uniquely informative book. In it, he includes dozens of large, vivid pictures of the amazing makeup transformations he has done. He does some amazing trasnformations on some women (some of them are models, not eve everyday girls) to make them look like totally different people. Scott Barnes is a true genius.

Overall, I say this book is meant more for the aspiring makeup artist than the everyday woman. Scott includes some interesting tips for every day makeup, but it's nothing you can't live without. In fact, his every day makeup look seems extremely complicated for everyday application. He uses 3 different kinds of foundations on some of his models. He is very precise and is really like an artist blending tons of colors and piling on the makeup. This is not too helpful for a regular woman because we don't have time or money to practice all his intricate techniques.

In his book, he includes some brief interviews with a dermatologist on how to prevent skin cancer (something you can easily look up online), Kim Kardashian, Kat DeLuna, and Jennifer Lopez. He includes some of his favorite products and essential tools. These are articles you can live without.

Bottom line: this is an interesting book for an aspiring makeup artist who wants to learn interesting techniques, but this is not convenient for the everyday woman.

I think Scott Barnes is a great makeup artist as well. I've recently started watching some of his videos on you tube. Its funny because up until about 6 months ago I never really heard of him. One of my best friends, who is a professional photographer and extremley creative in art and makeup got the awseome oppurtunity to become an intern at his home in New Jersey once a week. She loves it! She said he's one of the nicest down to earth people she's met. She gets to drive to Jersey once a week to do and watch something she loves and from such a terrific artist. I'm definitly jealous!!!

Thanks for sharing this awesome review. I definitely don't have time for three different types of foundation, nor do I think that it would look good in person (probably best for a photo).   We recently did a post on applying makeup in a few minutes and I have personally been trying a few of the tips and I really like them. http://www.totalbeauty.com/content/gallery/4-minute-makeup I think a great way to sort of streamline your routine but still look done up is to go bold with one component. I.E. red lips, liquid eyeliner. I have a pretty streamline base routine with simple foundation and concealer so just having everything ready and knowing what looks good on me helps me move faster too.
